CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS - LoveToKnow Article on CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
According to the life of Columbus by his son Ferdinand (a statement supported by Las Casas), young Christopher was sent to the university of Pavia, where he devoted himself to astronomy, geometry and cosmography.
This last pretension is gravely disputed, but it is perhaps not to be rejected, and we may also trace the Genoese about this time at Bristol, at Gaiway, and probably among the islands west and north of Scotland.
Quarrels, howev,~r, arose with the natives; the cacique was made prisoner, but escaped again; and before Columbus could leave the coast he had to abandon a caravel, to take the settlers on board, and to relinquish the enterprise of colonization.

Christopher is gone, vanished over that blue horizon; and the tale of life in Genoa goes on without him very much as before, except that Domenico has one apprentice less, and, a matter becoming of some importance in the narrow condition of his finances, one boy less to feed and clothe.
Christopher returned from these voyages, of which we know nothing except the facts that he has given us, towards the end of 1477; and it was probably in the next year that an event very important in his life and career took place.
She told Christopher how her husband, when he had first gone to Porto Santo, had taken there a litter of rabbits, and how the rabbits had so increased that in two seasons they had eaten up everything on the island, and rendered it uninhabitable for some time.

The trace() function will return the first intersection with the specified ray, no matter where on the surface it is. Given your description, I'm guessing you are shooting at the center of the torus from random positions outside of it...this obviously won't hit anything inside the torus.
The trace() function has nothing to do with object-object intersections, and any objects not passed to trace() simply do not exist, as far as it is concerned.
The trace() function would still be the simplest way to find a point on the surface, though.

Instead of greeting the new Briarwood Trace development in Fairfax County with protests, some of the neighbors are pledging to help build four of the houses.
Briarwood Trace, under construction off Interstate 66 near the Vienna Metro Station, will consist of 87 single-family houses -- 83 "executive style" houses, at prices beginning in the $700,000s, according to the builder, plus the four Habitat houses.
In Fairfax County, as throughout the rest of the region, new construction often brings strident opposition from existing residents, a situation that those in favor of development deride as NIMBY-ism, or the not-in-my-back-yard syndrome.

Lapis Magazine, Ptolemy Tompkins Review of "An Endless Trace" by Christopher Bamford   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
An Endless Trace goes in search of those virtues and qualities, charting a rambling course through the entire history of Western thought, from Pythagoras and Plato to Novalis, Goethe, and Heidegger.
From a number of perspectives -- historical, philosophical, literary, personal -- Bamford attacks the question of how one might go about living a life in accord with the idea - central to all the traditions he champions -- that the human person is a microcosm of an ever-evolving, multi-leveled universe.
These styles of seeing the world and the human person's place within it are as valid today as they ever were in the past, Bamford argues, and potentially hold much of value for those modern wisdom seekers who for decades have been spending so much of their time exclusively with Far Eastern traditions.

Blue Peter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The programme, devised by John Hunter Blair and edited for many years by Biddy Baxter, was first shown on October 16, 1958 with presenters Christopher Trace and Leila Williams.
The initial format was mainly the two presenters demonstrating dolls and model railways, with the male presenter concentrating on traditional boys toys such as model aeroplanes, and the female restricting herself to domestic tasks, such as cookery.
Former editor, Biddy Baxter, hated presenters' ad-libs and Simon Groom would infuriate her and test his fellow presenters by making ad-libbed double-entrendres, with a straight face.

Through the vast plain of European philosophic and religious thought meanders a small stream of unorthodox, sometimes occult belief that Bamford traces comprehensively, from the hermetic and Orphic traditions of ancient Greece, to the Celtic world's vision of Christianity, down to the fellowship of the Rosy Cross and the Romantics.
