Chroma key - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A chroma key is the removal of a color (or small color range) from one image to reveal another image "behind" it.
When the phase of the chroma signal corresponds to the preprogrammed state or states associated with the background color(s) behind the principal subject, the signal from the alternate background is inserted in the composite signal and presented at the output.
When the phase of the chroma signal deviates from that associated with the background color(s) behind the principal subject, video associated with the principal subject is presented at the output.

Munsell color system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Chroma" was measured out from the center of the wheel, with lower chroma being less saturated (washed out, such as pastels).
For instance light yellow colors have considerably more potential chroma than light purples, due to the nature of the eye and the physics of color stimuli.
This led to a wide range of possible chroma levels, and a chroma of 10 may or may not be maximal depending on the hue and value.

Chroma subsampling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In digital image processing, chroma subsampling is the use of lower resolution for the color (chroma) information in an image than for the brightness (intensity or luma) information.
Because the human eye is less sensitive to color than intensity, the chroma components of an image need not be as well defined as the luma component, so many video systems sample the color difference channels at a lower definition (i.e., sample frequency) than the brightness.
The three terms of the ratio are: the number of brightness ("luminance" "luma" or Y) samples, followed by the number of samples of the two color ("chroma") components: U/Cb then V/Cr, for each complete sample area.

Additionally, a high quality chroma key algorithm is intended to serve as an example of a fairly complex real-world algorithm which would be interesting to implement using Intel MMX or other multimedia enhanced architecture.
The fundamental problem for a chroma key function is, first, to decide which pixels in the foreground image belong to the blue backing and which - to needed foreground objects and, second, how to identify and process boundary pixels.
As a second part of the project, it was planed to re-implement the chroma key algorithm on MMX architecture as an example of a fairly complex real-world application.

DVD Player Benchmark - Chroma Upsampling Error
When the interlaced algorithm is applied to progressive images, chroma samples that were supposed to be used for scan lines 1 and 2 are instead interpolated to scan lines 1 and 3, and the chroma samples for scan lines 3 and 4 instead are affecting 2 and 4.
In the simplest case, where the chroma lines are just copied to the adjacent image lines, the end result is that scan line 2 gets the chroma information that should have gone to scan line 3, and vise-versa, all the way down the screen.
The chroma information from field 1 leaks into field 2 and vice versa on every pair of fields, and the result is a bizarre pre- and post-echo in the chroma channel.

CBS bought the Chroma design, assigned it to their Rhodes division, and hired Philip Dodds and the former ARP engineering team to produce the synthesizer.

 Chroma subsampling in JPG compression
Chroma subsampling is a method that stores color information at lower resolution than intensity information.
Chroma subsampling may be a reasonable compression strategy for high resolution images, but for color web images, one is better served by turning off chroma subsampling and compressing more aggressively to achieve the same file size.
One should note that turning off chroma subsampling may not always be the wisest choice for compromising between file size and image quality.
