Known Carcinogen: Chromium and Certain Chromium Compounds   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Chromium is used as an alloying and plating element on metal and plastic substrates for corrosion resistance in chromium- containing and stainless steels and in protective coatings for automotive and equipment accessories.
Chromium trioxide is used in chromium plating and in the manufacture of chromated copper arsenate (NCI DCE, 1985c).
Chromium (in the form of unidentified chromium compounds) is widely distributed in air, water, soil, and food.

1998 TRI Data - Top Ten Companies
The second largest component of ARMCO/AK’s TRI numbers (5.8 million pounds of the remaining 6.0 million pounds) are the result of the off-site disposal (.55 million) or Off-site transfer (5.2 million pounds) of metal compounds.
Chromium, manganese and nickel are prevalent in the steel making industry and are emitted as a particulate.
The bulk of the TRI numbers (6,510,000 million pounds of 6,770,000 million pounds) is the offsite transfer of metal compounds (primarily zinc).

U.S. Patent: 5010152 - Polymerization process utilizing chromium on an acid agglomerated refractory gel - April 23, 1991
When the purpose is to produce a chromium olefin polymerization catalyst the chromium is preferably incorporated by simply utilizing a water soluble chromium compound which is coprecipitated with the refractory material.
Chromium is generally present in an amount within the range of 0.001 to 10, preferably 0.1 to 5, more preferably about 1 weight percent based on the weight of the dried gel.
Generally where chromium is to be converted to the hexavalent state the chromium-containing xerogel is heated in an oxygen-containing ambient, generally air at a temperature within the range of 300.degree.

 TRI Explorer Report (COFA)
TRI Explorer is using an interim data set that includes revisions submitted to EPA as of August 1, 2001 for the years 1988 to 1999 (i.e., revisions submitted to EPA after this time are not reflected in TRI Explorer reports).
Users of TRI information should be aware that TRI data reflect releases and other waste management of chemicals, not exposure of the public to those chemicals.
TRI data, in conjunction with other information, can be used as a starting point in evaluating exposures that may result from release and other waste management activities that involve toxic chemicals.

Chromium on mixed metal phosphate base with organoboron cocatalyst - Patent 4481302
A catalyst system according to claim 1 wherein the chromium of said chromium component is present in an amount within the range of 0.1 to 5 weight percent based on the weight of said xerogel base.
With chromium on silica olefin polymerization catalysts, it has been found that a more economical route to olefin polymerization is to utilize a slurry system for the polymerization.
The chromium compounds are used in amounts sufficient to give 0.001 to 10, preferably 0.1 to 5, more preferably about 1 weight percent chromium based on the weight of the xerogel base.

 Feature Article - Chromium Plating
Another way to produce microporous chromium is to lightly spray the surface of the chromium deposit with a hard, fine abrasive material such as 60- or 80-mesh alumina, or sand.
A major distinction between trivalent chromium processes is the chemistry used to prevent the formation of hexavalent chromium at the anode during plating.
The membrane prevents the migrating trivalent chromium ions in the solution from reaching the anode, thus preventing their oxidation to the hexavalent state.

 JEA - TRI
Each year since 1987 more than 23,000 companies have filed TRI reports on their total emissions of more than 600 different chemicals.
TRI reports are filed with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Mercury emissions by electric utilities are below TRI reporting requirements--our industry accounts for less than a third of all U.S. industrial mercury emissions--but Florida utilities are currently monitoring and reporting to the EPA under a different program.

 Cobalt-aluminum-phosphorus-silicon-oxide molecular sieves - Patent 4744970
These compositions may be prepared hydrothermally from gels containing reactive compounds of cobalt, aluminum, phosphorus and silicon capable of forming framework tetrahedral oxides, and preferably at least one organic templating agent which functions in part to determine the course of the crystallization mechanism and the structure of the crystalline product.
In the foregoing expression of the reaction composition, the reactants are normalized with respect to the total of "w", "x", "y" and "z" such that (w+x+y+z)=1.00 mole, whereas in the examples the reaction mixtures are expressed in terms of molar oxide ratios and may be normalized to the moles of P.sub.2 O.sub.5.
This latter form is readily converted to the former form by routine calculations by dividing the number of moles of each component (including the template and water) by the total number of moles of cobalt, aluminum, phosphorus and silicon which results in normalized mole fractions based on total moles of the aforementioned components.

Chromium may reduce risk of diabetes
A new study presented at the 57th Annual Scientific Session of the American Diabetes Association Meeting in Boston, on June 23, 1997, demonstrated that daily supplementation with 1,000 micrograms of chromium supplied as chromium picolinate significantly enhanced the action of insulin.
Insulin is the master metabolic hormone in our body and regulates blood sugar; chromium is an essential trace mineral required by humans in order for insulin to work properly.
Also examined in these subjects (using a sophisticated imaging technique) was the amount of abdominal fat present at the beginning and end of the study.
