Topic: Chromosome 11 (human)

Chromosome 11 - Genetics Home Reference
Chromosome 11 is one of the 23 pairs of chromosomes in humans.
Chromosome 11 spans about 134 million base pairs (the building material of DNA) and represents between 4 and 4.5 percent of the total DNA in cells.
Genes on chromosome 11 are among the estimated 20,000 to 25,000 total genes in the human genome.

Identification of Possible Human Liver Tumor Suppressor Genes - DERT
Background: Several distinct regions of human chromosome 11 demonstrate loss of heterozygosity or confer tumor suppression in chromosome transfer studies in specific types of human tumors, including liver cancer, suggesting the presence of multiple tumor suppressor genes on this chromosome.
By developing a model in which human chromosome 11 was introduced into a rat liver tumor cell line this laboratory was able to create a new cell line that exhibits suppression of tumorigenicity.
In preliminary analyses in four human carcinoma cell lines, the transcript of one gene, p53-induced protein (PIG11), was lost or significantly decreased in two of the lines identifying this gene for potential involvement in some human liver carcinomas.

Mapping of the gene for the tyrosine kinase Itk to a region of conserved synteny between mouse chromosome 11 and human chromosome 5q.The protein-tyrosine kinase gene Itk is expressed preferentially in T lymphoid cells of the mouse and is induced by IL-2.
Because mutations in Btk and the corresponding human gene are associated with X-linked immunodeficiency syndromes, it was of interest to map Itk and its human counterpart.

A complete NotI restriction map covering the entire long arm of human chromosome 11 -- Hosoda et al. 2 (5): 345 -- ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
BACKGROUND: Human chromosome 11 is one of the autosomes on which many disease genes have been mapped.
CONCLUSIONS: The restriction map of the entire long arm of human chromosome 11 is the longest restriction map of the human genome.
This mapping has disclosed unique features regarding the organization of the chromosome, indicating that restriction sites of NotI, a CpG-recognition enzyme, are primarily distributed in R (or T) bands and that genetic distance is considerably longer in R (or T) bands than in G bands.

A panel of 26 mouse--human somatic cell hybrids containing different human chromosome complements was analyzed with a cloned human pepsinogen cDNA probe to determine the chromosomal location and the number of genes encoding these proteins.
Examination of somatic cell hybrids containing single copies of chromosome 11 and the corresponding human parental cell lines revealed a restriction fragment length polymorphism determined by pepsinogen haplotypes that contained two or three genes, respectively.
Concurrent studies of DNA from individuals exhibiting the most common pepsinogen electrophoretic phenotypes with exon-specific probes demonstrated that the absence of one gene among the different restriction fragment patterns correlated with the absence of one specific isozymogen (Pg 5).
