  Chronic Town - Definition, explanation
Chronic Town is an EP released by the band R.E.M in 1982 for I.R.S. Records.
Chronic Town is the first illustration of R.E.M.'s signature musical style: jangling guitars, chords played in arpeggio, murmured vocals, and lyrics that completely avoid the standard topics of popular music - love and relationships.
It was re-released as tracks 16-21 of the 1987 album Dead Letter Office, where it was described in the liner notes as "a little bit of 'uh-huh' and a lot of 'oh yeah'".

While purists will insist on an undiluted copy of the band's 1982 Chronic Town EP, R.E.M. completists (and those who just like a lot of tracks for their money) will be grateful for the inclusion of 15 additional B-sides and curios on this 1987 compilation.
But all that will be forgotten by the time Chronic Town's 'Wolves, Lower' kicks in, signaling the official arrival of a band that forever changed the face of Southern rock.

Their debut EP, Chronic Town sounds surprisingly different from, and more lively than, their first full-length, 1983's Murmur.
Chronic Town captures R.E.M. as a fractured rock band with some melodic pop influence, and it was no doubt an influence on the Pixies some years later.
It isn't perfect from beginning to end (and, as an EP, this is a problem), but the good easily outweights the bad and some of these songs are among the best they've ever written.

R.E.M.'s Chronic Town EP was one of last year's more invigorating, tuneful surprises: a record from an Athens, Georgia, band that cared not a whit for the fashionable quirks of that town's dance-rock outfits like the B-52's or Pylon.
The execution wasn't always up to the ideas–instrumentally, the band was still stumbling at times – but Chronic Town served notice that R.E.M. was an outfit to watch.
Murmur is a darker record than Chronic Town, but this band's darkness is shot through with flashes of bright light.

The people who would buy it just for the sake of having it on its own would be the rare completist, and most of those would have already pursued options like E-bay or Trading or Record Conventions.
