He is the Co-Director of the Research Fellowship in Psychopharmacology and Clinical Psychobiology at UCSD and was Director of the UCSD Mental Health Clinical Research Center from 1982-2001.
His major interests are in neuropsychopharmacology and clinical psychopharmacology, sleep and sleep disorders, chronobiology, mood disorders, and research training.
Gillin received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College.
