But this proved a poor year for the industry in general and Chrysler in particular, so only about 16,000 Imperials were built for the model year.
Chrysler engineers were by now sufficiently experienced with unit construction to use it for their most-expensive product, and newer technology allowed computerized stress testing of a given shape before it was ever built.
Seeking to cut losses, Chrysler decided it was time to forget Imperial, and the last ’75 Imperial left the Jefferson Avenue plant in Detroit on June 12, 1975: a LeBaron hardtop sedan bearing serial number YM43-T5C-182947.

Chrysler prefers to call this powertrain "fuel-efficient." Given the Chrysler 300's curb weight of 3,700 pounds, we'd say it's underpowered, producing a lackadaisical zero-to-60 acceleration run in 10.7 pathetic seconds.
It's a mistake for Chrysler to reach into the low $20,000s to capture buyers when trying to reposition as a premium brand (let 'em buy the Sebring!), but otherwise this is a smart and highly visible effort to boost the prestige of Chrysler's winged badge.

This generation of Chrysler, although already smaller than its maximum size in the mid 1970s, was still V8-powered and rear wheel drive.
The rear-wheel drive Fifth Avenue would continue for six successful years and would prove to be the last V8-powered, rear wheel drive Chrysler until the Chrysler 300 was revived in that configuration for 2005.
In this form, it resembled the newly-revived Chrysler Imperial, although some much-needed distinction was provided between the cars when the Fifth Avenue (along with its New Yorker Salon linemate) received restyled, rounded-off front and rear ends for the 1992 model year, while the Imperial continued in its original crisply-lined form.

The Chrysler LeBaron, Chrysler New Yorker and Plymouth Caravelle names (as well as the Diplomat) all continued to the "K" car, which was also known in other versions as the Dodge 400/600, Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant.

Dan Minick believes the Mitsubishi platform was chosen because it is newer, and because it is more adaptable - it can fit all wheel drive, transverse or longitudinal engines, etc. This is important for something that will become an sedan, wagon, convertible, and possibly SUV and sports car (sedan, hatchback, wagon, and ragtop are confirmed).
Chrysler said that the joint-venture Neon replacement will be the basis of the next-after-this-next-generation Sebring, Stratus, and Galant, which would be "stretch" versions - much as the Spirit (and Daytona, and Caravan, and Limousine, and LeBaron, etc.) was based on the Reliant.
The 2006 Chrysler Sebring will probably be based on the modified Galant platform, with Chrysler taking the engineering lead on a redesign of that platform and other components.
