  The Mopar slant six engines
Even with the standard carb, the slant six (so named because it was a straight six - in other words, an in-line six - slanted over 30 degrees) had a nice mixture of torque and economy, with power better than similar, same-year GM and Ford offerings.
The slant six replaced a flat-head design in 1960 models and lasted in US-built cars through 1983, in US-built trucks until 1987, and survived as a marine engine until 1991.
Ben Deutschman of the Slant Six Club of New York/New Jersey wrote that owners should be careful not to put on spark plugs with the "crush washer" (the loose metal washer at the end), but to take off the washer first, if they have a 1960-1974 engine.

 Chrysler Slant 6 engine Information
The engine was specifically designed to be slanted; it is not an upright engine that was simply installed in a slanted position like the engines in the Honda S2000 and BMW M6.
The engine was introduced in two sizes in 1960: The 170  in³ (2.8 L) "LG" (Low-G, referring to the relatively short engine block casting and crankshaft stroke) in the Valiant, and the 225  in³ (3.7 L) "RG" (Raised-G, referring to the relatively tall engine block casting and crankshaft stroke) in mid-size Plymouth and Dodge Dart models.
In 1960, the engine was referred to by Plymouth division as the "30-D Economy Six" engine, the "30-D" referring to the 30° cylinder block angle.

Chrysler was banking on the fact that softer aluminum is easier to machine and doesn't wear out tooling as quickly as cast iron.
Chrysler recognized that if tooling life was significantly increased, the capital investment in machinery required to process engine blocks could be reduced.
The basic gasket (Chrysler PN 2128279, McCord PN 6530M) is 0.050 thick (0.045 compressed) and consists of a sheet of perforated steel flanked with rubber-asbestos sheets and a copper sheet facing the water jacket.

SLANT 6 played their first show in the Summer of 1992 with Myra Power (Lucky 13) on bass, Christina Billotte (Autoclave, QUIX*O*TIC) on guitar and voice and Marge Marshall debuting on drums.
Slant 6 took their name from an in-line six cylinder engine produced in the 1960's and 70's by Dodge for the Chrysler Motor Company.
In 1995, Slant 6 released their second album, "Inzombia" (Dischord 94), recorded a split 7 inch single with Make-Up and toured in England.

Jack shares his knowledge on the Chrysler Max Wedge Stage I & II in the Lancers ans 300's!
Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth (RIP), DeSoto (RIP), and Imperial (once a separate line of Chrysler cars) were the top of the automotive world with respect to power and performance, but these cars were huge and, well, quirky.
In 1960, in part of what the RamCharger guy were doing, Chrysler introduced a wild aluminum cross-ram intake set-up for the 383, which placed the carbs over the inner fenders and fed the air/fuel mixture through long two runners which ran over the valve covers on opposite sides of the engine (the first “cross-ram manifold”).
Chrysler had two main objectives as it entered the mid-sixties and the “Horsepower Wars.” What platforms could we put the new Hemi in, and how to make a car that would peel the young market away from Ford and Pontiac with the Mustang and the GTO.

In 1968 the 340 engine was born to the musclecar era of Mopar vehicles while in 1971 the 360 followed.
Engineers at Chrysler deemed that the 383 did not need enhancements such as these because it already had the torque and horsepower to handle the loads it would have to carry in the light-duty truck application.

The slant six had a unique 30 degree slant for a lower hood line and easier arrangement of accessories; it also allowed the intake manifold to have a ram effect.
Beyond this, the world of /6 building for performance is outside my experience, though as always it's cheaper to swap to a larger engine than it is to build a small one to scream.
In addition, with the lower block height it was a sturdier engine, and with the shorter stroke could rev higher with less chance of an rpm failure.

The main reason that the engine was tilted to the side, was to allow the water pump to be positioned to the side of the engine.
It was a Valiant (“by Chrysler”), and not a Plymouth Valiant, but it was not a prototype.
The economy of the engine was demonstrated in the 1975 Feather Duster, and the Dart Light.

 Clifford Performance :: Make 6 = 8
The reason Jack chose a flat-head 6 was that Hudson Hornets started NASCAR racing back in the early 1950s at Daytona Beach, Florida.
His 6 cylinder flat-head blew the doors off the 327 V-8 Chevy by two full car lengths which allowed Ford to be #1 in the manufacturer's class.
This really showed the possibilities of what a 6 cylinder flat-head could do, so by 1967 Jack made new history by using OHV sixes to go too.

The carburetor that came with the engine was a joke.
The front mount on the Bus' 302 was a weird set-up which caused the engine to sit at an angle (like a Chrysler slant 6).
The pistons will help the engine "rev" faster, be easier on the bottom end and will probably result in higher gas mileage due to their weight difference and the higher compression.

All of Chrysler's larger engines, with the notable exception of the Hemi were available as factory options.
A redesign of the D Series for 1972 introduced a more rounded look (similar to the 1973 to 1987 GM C/K series), but included features such as an independent front suspension and pocketed taillights (the distinctive reverse on top lights were recessed to 1/4 in to avoid damage in loading docks and confined spaces).

From his bell housing to the radiator flange he had 4 more inches to play with, so I'd bet that he originally had a longer GMC engine (he runs a Chevy 235 now) and that he could make the conversion to a 270 or 302 without any cutting being necessary.

It's not that it was totally because it was a Wedge head but rather it was a matter of the Wedge head being located outboard on the cylinder bores which tended to shroud the valves.
