Topic: Chthon (novel)

  The Compleat Piers Anthony
Chthon was the prison of the damned, and the man incarcerated here was damned, whether there was justice in it or no. Legally damned and legally dead: no one escaped from Chthon.
He had been told that Chthon consisted of a maze of lava tubes, and intellectually he knew that their formation had been completed many centuries before, but it was hard to be objective.
Chthon was pictured outside as the home of perpetual rampage and orgy, sadism and torture beyond belief.

 Books : Chthon
Chthon was Piers Anthony’s first published novel in 1967, written over the course of seven years.
He started it when he was in the US Army, so it has a long prison sequence that is reminiscent of that experience, being dark and grim.
Chthon is a cut above the rest, despite it being a first work and I applaud an already celebrated author for yet another great work of fiction!

 Piers Anthony's Newsletter June 1999
Maybe that's the count: one million.) It says the Xanth novels formula is a teenaged main character, gratuitous love interest, a sidekick with a body composed of parts from twenty-nine distinct species, a boring old adult, summarized thus: Teenager Main Character and friends go OUT and have a QUEST.
BUT - as is discussed in The Color of Her Panties, a Xanth novel that some stores don't like to carry because they object to the title in some way they won't quite specify, there are some sound reasons to withhold some information and experience from children until they are old enough to handle it.
Now a Xanth novel is a Xanth novel, and they have similar elements by no coincidence, and it's hard to choose between them, but this one struck me as one of the stronger ones, perhaps stronger than Zombie Lover, which I also feel is a good one.

The reason I think they are mistaken is that I never get that response from a reader who begins with a later novel in a series, except in one case: he read the Xanth series backwards, and when he reached the first novel, said sorry, it wasn't up to the standards of the later ones.
No novel is a clone of any preceding one, though with a background cast of characters and things that has grown to thousands, there are many familiar aspects.
A: I do one Xanth novel a year, because at the moment that is all that publishers will accept; they don't want any other type of fiction from me, so Xanth pays my way.

Within this prison are real monsters, truly horrifying and very unique, many of which are seen only from offstage or half-seen, and the very indistinctness this lends to these creatures adds to their effect.
