Had Berry's life not been cut short when he died at age 33 as the result of an automobile accident, he probably could have become the most significant jazz saxophonist of the 20th century.
Dan Morgenstern, director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, says of Berry, "Considering the brevity of 'Chu's' life, and that his recording career spans a mere decade, it is remarkable that his name continues to loom large in the annals of jazz.
"Chu" Berry was born in Wheeling on Sept. 13, 1908, the son of Brown Berry and Maggie Glasgow Berry.

From what I have read on Chu Berry, he didn't make his mark on the music scene until the thirties, after Conn had stopped making the B and Bb on opposite sides of the bell, the mark of a Chu Berry horn.
It must be a "New Wonder" before they were called "Chu Berry" and had the key work altered to the long Eb kwey, and the finger-nail #G key.
The main noticable difference is the chu's has a fingernail file G# key and the new wonders have a smooth slightly small G# key.

He was one of the first to use them and become notorious amongst his musician friends for doing so, that's how the New Wonder acquired the nickname "Chu Berry" sax.
All of Chu's friends would say " Well now, Lester Young is playing one of those Chu Berry saxes." and the nickname stuck to the New Wonder Tenor.
If you don't have a Chu in your collection, you are missing one of the nicest Conn's of them all.
