DVD Verdict Review - Chu Chin Chow
Chu Chin Chow is an unabashed attempt to capitalize on audience's appetite for the exotic, gaudy, and extreme.
Chu Chin Chow, along with Piccadilly and Joseph von Sternberg's Shanghai Express, became her most important contributions to cinema (her shining moment could have been in the epic The Good Earth, but due to racism she lost the role to Luise Rainer, who subsequently won her second Oscar for her performance).
In Chu Chin Chow, Wong is the only actor who possesses any awareness of how to perform for the camera, and her role, though rather limited, has a sexiness and erotic pull that still packs a punch today.

GreenCine | product main - Chu Chin Chow (1934)
The timeworn British stage musical Chu Chin Chow had already been made into a silent picture when this talkie version made its bow in 1934.
The obligatory romantic subplot is handled by John Garrick and Pearl Argyle, while comedy relief is supplied by a vaudevillian named Jetsam (that's right, of the team of "Flotsam and...") Director Walter Forde does little to "cinematize" the old property, which is just as well.
Originally released at 93 minutes, Chu Chin Chow was shorn of about 5 minutes before its American release; presumably some of the sexier "nautch" dances were among the excised scenes.

DVD Talk Review: Chu Chin Chow
A lavish and old-fashioned musical, 1934's Chu Chin Chow was one of the bigger English productions of its time, an adaptation of an Oscar Asche stage show that ran for years.
Hasan disguises himself as the Chinese trader Chu Chin Chow to gain access to the palace, but is detected by dancer Zahrat (Anna May Wong) and made to flee.
The appeal of Orientalism must have been important in 1934, for the movie's title is the name of a relatively unimportant character, a victim of Abu Hasan that he then impersonates in the film's first act.

While this 1934 production was hardly a career-defining moment for any of the cast (the first two were already international stars), as a British representation of the Hollywood musical genre it is a minor classic.

An excerpt from the movie Elstree Calling is also featured.  This was a collection of skits made up to look like a vaudeville show, and the one on this disc has Anna May Wong in a comedy bit that is (very) loosely based on The Taming of the Shrew.
The first disc is rounded off with text biographies of the main actors and the director as well as trailers to other VCI releases.
The third DVD has an 11 minute reel of film noir trailers which were fun to watch as well as bios for the featured actors in the film.

Rare British film worth the watch on DVD - The Reminder Online
Chu Chin Chow is the filmed adaptation of a successful British stage musical based on the story of "Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves." At that time in the 1930s, many British films were low-budget affairs that had a difficult time attracting audiences from the more popular American imports.
It was an opulent Hollywood-style musical with great sets, an adult tone watch out for all those scantily clad slave girls and over-the-top comic performances.
The cut-down version, Ali Baba Nights, is also there, as well as a third feature with Fritz Kortner who played the villain in Chu Chin Chow.

Combustible Celluloid film review - Chu Chin Chow (1934), Walter Forde, Fritz Kortner, Anna May Wong, dvd review
Adapted from a very popular stage success from its day, Chu Chin Chow tells a version of the Ali Baba story, complete with bad guy Abu Hasan (Fritz Kortner) and slave girls Maryana (Pearl Argyle) and Zahrat (Wong).
Of course, Chu Chin Chow delves into the secret cave full of stolen jewels guarded by a password ("open sesame") that most Americans probably know from Popeye and Bugs Bunny cartoons.
The set also comes with Ali Baba Nights, which is the 78-minute edited version of Chu Chin Chow that opened in the United States in the 1930s, and the quality is much the same as the longer version.
