Chu Ci - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chu Ci (Traditional Chinese: 楚辭, Simplified Chinese: 楚辞, pinyin: chǔ cí), also known as Songs of the South or Songs of Chu, is an anthology of Chinese poems by Qu Yuan and Song Yu from the Warring States period and subsequent imitators of their poetic style.
Chu Ci was named after a new form of poetry that sprouted and blossomed in the area of Chu during the Warring States period.
Furthermore, chu ci should be recited using pronunciations of the dialect of Chu, unlike poems of Shi Jing, which were sung using dialects north of the Yellow River.

In traditional Chinese history, Chu appears as the semibarbarous culture of the south, opposed to the middle kingdoms of the heartland on the Yellow River, the conservative rule of Qi in Shandong, and the aggressive power of Qin, which would eventually unite the civilized world.
In the next hundred years, Wu was destroyed by Yue, and Chu confirmed authority in the southeast, but by 400 B.C. the days of expansion were over, and Chu was forced onto the defensive against the northern states.
And in later centuries, behind the mainstream tradition of imperial Confucianism, the influence of Chu may be seen in ceremonies at the court of Han, in the rhythms and style of the fu rhapsody, and in popular and personal beliefs and approaches to the supernatural.

Shi jing Songs as Performance Texts
Focused on a detailed philological analysis of the sacrificial hymn “Chu ci” in the Shi jing, the present study aims to reconstruct the dramatic multi-vocal structure of an exemplary early Chinese performance text.
This structure of multiple voices and changing perspectives is then discussed through a close analysis of linguistic features such as rhyme shifts, the distribution of pronouns and formal designations for the ritual participants, and the use of formulaic prayer sequences.
In view of the evidence from “Chu ci,” it is suggested that its multi-vocal structure is not a singular phenomenon but reflects a principle of composition that might also apply to other early Chinese ritual texts.
