  What Happened To Chu Lai
Chu was called back to Seoul, Korea on business and would miss the first six days of our trip.
We reached Chu Lai only to find our presence not welcome and were not allowed down the beach road to our old LRRP headquarters.
I told him that was total insanity, because Chu Lai is 108 kilometers away and Highway 1 is a heavily traveled two lane road cluttered with bicycles, motorcycles, cars, busses, and water buffalo traffic, not to mention pedestrian movement and construction.

There was no harbor at Chu Lai, at the mouth of the Truong River, and the unprotected coastal site was subjected to heavy seas especially during the northeast or winter monsoon period; both the causeway and the fuel line was damaged in 1965.
The weather continued to hamper operations at Chu Lai, witnessed by the loss of the Mahnomen County LST-912 in January 1967.
The Naval presence in Chu Lai diminished after June 1970, when logistic facilities were turned over to the Army, whose units were playing a greater operational role in the southern I Corps region.

CHU LAI-- Twenty-one medals for valor, more awards than the Americal Division has ever made for a single action, were presented in ceremonies recently at the 176th Aslt.
I pulled pitch, crossed the bomb dump, and quite literally headed for the hills west of Chu Lai, front doors flapping in the breeze, and not known at the moment, trailing fuel cause, yes folks, the fuel cap was sitting on the refueling point, sheared off of it's chain by the opening cargo door.
When I was at Chu Lai at your camp, it was like an R and R for me. We never had the ocean so close to us, and in fact it was just about a 1/2 mile walk from my tent on the sand, to the beach.

On April 4, 1969 First Lieutenant Ronald D. Layton, flying a VMA-211 A-4 Skyhawk against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam, was shot down and killed by enemy ground fire.

Chu Lai airport in the central province of Quang Nam on March 22 officially organised the inauguration ceremony and welcomed the first commercial flight conducted by the national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines.
The ATR 72 plane, from Ho Chi Minh City, carried 64 passengers on board, most of them businesspeople investing in the Chu Lai and Dung Quat Economic Zones (IZ) in Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces, respectively.
Initially, Vietnam Airlines will offer two flights on the Chu Lai - Ho Chi Minh City air route every Monday and Thursday with ATR 72 planes.
