  Silver Chub Fact Sheet
The silver chub is a silvery minnow with large eyes.
In the northern part of its range, the silver chub is found in the Red River in Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri, and in the Red River in North Dakota and Manitoba.
Scientists theorize that the population decline was due to several factors, including deterioration in water quality, decreases in the number of mayfly larvae (the chub's preferred food), and habitat modification that resulted in loss of suitable environment for the silver chub.

Preserving Humpback Chub from Extinction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Humpback chub were federally listed as endangered in 1967 and since that time have suffered extreme declines in number and distribution.
Declines in humpback chub numbers are believed to have been caused by dams on the Colorado River which altered water flow and water temperature and allowed introduced fish species which eat small humpback chub to proliferate.
Today humpback chub populations are carefully monitored by the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Fish and Wildlife Service to identify and remedy specific factors causing continued population declines.

Earthjustice: Urgent Cases: Grand Canyon Humpback Chub
The two primary factors driving the chub toward extinction have been habitat destruction caused by the Glen Canyon Dam and competition from non-native fish species adapted to the cold, clear water associated with the dam’s operation.
Furthermore, the August 2002 amendment to the recovery plan sets certain "recovery goals," or population targets, which would allow the FWS to delist the chub, that is, eliminate its ESA protections, once the population reaches 2,100 fish.
This means that the FWS is proposing to declare the chub "recovered" at a lower population than the chub was at when it was originally listed as an endangered species.
