The zone was dissolved in 1955, and Chubut was declared a province.
Internal immigration of the last decades of the 20th century, especially from Buenos Aires, raised the population steadily from 190,000 (1970), to 357,000 (1991) and 413,237 (2001).

The town was founded in 1865 by a group of colonists from Wales, assisted by the Argentine government; and its prosperity has led to the foundation of other important centres in the valley, such as Trelew and Gaiman, which is connected by railway with Puerto Madryn on Bahia Nueva.
Between the Chubut and the Senguerr there are vast stretches of fertile land, spreading over the Andean region to the foot of the Cordillera and the lateral ridges of the Pre-Cordillera, and filling the basins of some desiccated lakes, which have been occupied since 1885, and farms and colonies founded upon them.
The chief of these colonies is that of 16 de Octubre, formed in 1886, mainly by the inhabitants of Chubut colony, in the longitudinal valley which extends to the eastern foot of the Cordillera.

The Directorate General of Forest and Parks (DGByP) of Chubut is in charge of the implementation of forest policy which seeks the conservation of the native forest resources, the protection against fires and plagues and the forestation of suitable areas.
As a large part of the forests in the province of Chubut are in extremely difficult accessible areas and because financial resources were limited, more emphasis was given to the image processing in order to reduce the costs of fieldwork.
