Bednarik was no "Lovin' Dan." His plaque in the Pro Football Hall of Fame says he was a "rugged, durable, bulldozing blocker" and a "bone-jarring tackler." That meant he was no Deion, either.
Bednarik speaks from a vastly different reference point, remembering a time when he was not such an exception to the ever-changing rules.
Bednarik stayed close to home after the war, enrolling at Penn in 1945 with the goal of becoming a coach and a teacher.

Chuck Bednarik (born May 1, 1925 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) is a former professional football player, best remembered as one of the most devastating tacklers in the history of football.
Bednarik subsequently attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he was an All-American.
Bednarik was the first player drafted in the 1949 National Football League draft, chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Bednarik Award is named for Chuck Bednarik, the last of the 60-minute men, who was a stalwart at both linebacker and center for the 1960 National Football League champion Philadelphia Eagles and a three-year All-American from the University of Pennsylvania, playing on both sides of the ball.
When the Maxwell Football Club decided to have an award for College Defensive Player of the Year, the first name to come to mind for the award was Charles Philip (Chuck) Bednarik, one of football's outstanding players of all time, who enjoyed a 14-year career in the NFL.
Bednarik was elected to the Pennsylvania State Hall of Fame in 1962, the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967, the College Football Hall of Fame in 1969, the All-Time 50 Year NFL Team in 1970 and by the NFL to the 75th Anniversary Two-Way Team.

Bednarik's story is much more interesting than just his battles on the gridiron, his real battles made him a hero before ever going to Penn.
He became the first offensive lineman to ever win the Maxwell Award as the nation's top football player in 1948 and finished 3rd in the Heisman balloting, but he was just as good at linebacker as his NFL career would show.
