A former member of the rock band Styx, he founded the group with his brother, drummer John Panozzo, who died in July 1996.
After three decades as a Styx mainstay, Chuck Panozzo left the band shortly thereafter, though he has reappeared with the band occasionally.
In 2001 Panozzo announced he was gay and living with AIDS, and he has been involved in campaigning for AIDS awareness and gay rights.

During the recording of Brave New World Chuck did manage to perform on the record, but it was very difficult for him and nobody was saying what we feared most.
Chuck stayed home and got extremely involved in battling this thing that had him in its grip.

The band reunited in 1995 to re-record "Lady" for Styx Greatest Hits (1995) and a 1996 tour, but John Panozzo was unable to participate due to declining health caused by problems with alcohol that killed him soon after.
Chuck Panozzo also left at this time - partly out of loyalty to DeYoung, and also to mourn his brother's death (Glen Burtnik returned to fill Chuck's bass duties).
DeYoung continued his solo career (his biggest solo album was "Desert Moon"), and Chuck Panozzo announced he was HIV positive in 2001.

Young (guitar/vocals) continue much in the same vein as their eponymous debut.
The primary difference was the inclusion of the DeYoung power ballad "Lady" -- which catapulted the combo into the Top Ten Pop Singles survey at an admirable number six.
