Chugach National Forest spans parts of the Kenai Peninsula and the area around Prince William Sound.
The Chugach Mountains run 300 miles between the Copper River to the east and to Whittier to the west.

The Chugach Mountains of southern Alaska are the northernmost of the several mountain ranges that make up the Coast Ranges of the western edge of North America.
The mountains are protected in the Chugach State Park and the Chugach National Forest.
The name "Chugach" is from the Eskimo tribal name Chugachmiut recorded by the Russians and written by them "Chugatz" and "Tchougatskoi"; in 1898 U.S. Army Captain W. Abercrombie spelled the name "Chugatch" and applied it to the mountains.

In September, darkness in the Chugach isn't a factor until about 8:30 pm and four tired men were able to get the ram back to camp in the daylight.
He was a loner and was bedded in full view amongst the rocky spires but a piece of the mountain was shielding a view of his horns and we were unable to evaluate him.

For our latest adventure Yvonne and I (and Peter Smith and Tom Ruszkowski) flew into the Scandinavia Glacier in the Chugach Mountains for a week of climbing and skiing.
The hut is owned by the Mountaineering Club of Alaska and we used it for cooking and gear storage.
Yvonne didn't like using her alpine axe and complained a little; but she had a good belay so she made it up without too much whining.
