The seven surviving octuplets born to a Houston woman last month are breathing on their own, marking an important milestone in the development of the infants, who were born 25 to 27 weeks prematurely.
Chukwu, who had been at St. Luke’s since October, was released from the hospital Dec. 30.
The births of the octuplets, so soon after the November births of sextuplets at St. Luke’s, created an equipment challenge for respiratory therapists at the hospital, who had to borrow ventilators from other facilities to accommodate the infants.

For Chukwu, the first baby was born naturally Dec. 8, followed by the seven others delivered by Caesarean section 12 days later.
Historically, few babies as small as the octuplet who died — who was born at just 10.3 ounces — have survived more than a few hours after birth, though recent improvements in treatment of tiny newborns have improved the odds somewhat.
In fact, a detailed account of Chukwu's life in the two months before the octuplets were born, and what has yet to occur to the surviving babies, would be useful.
