Day 9 - North Wauwona and ChumbaWumba falls - Murph's Soapbox   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
It's the trail to Chilnualna falls (hereafter referred to as ChumbaWumba falls), 2200 feet of elevation gain in an eight mile round trip.
We convinced ourselves that 2200 feet over a four mile outbound leg was easier than the 1600 ele gain in a mile and a half over at Vernal.
Chumbawumba falls have a series of levels, we had made it to the largest, but it was clear we weren't going to make the top of the mountain and make it back on schedule.

Chumbawumba - Tubthumper - (Album Commentary via proudestmonkeys.com)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Chumbawumba, a band comprised of nearly a dozen friends who have been together for about fifteen years, finally acheived mainstream success late in 1997 with their chart-topping single, "Tubthumping." After months on the airwaves, "Tubthumping," and with it Chumbawumba as a whole, has faded to the background.
This is nothing new in the music industry, as one-hit-wonders are an everyday occurrence, yet Chumbawumba warrants closer inspection.
Chumbawumba is nothing if not unique, and the album's varied musical tastes are tribute to this.

I pretty sure that none of Crass was/is in Chumbawumba, but I know Chumbawumba used to actually be a punk band.
Chumbawumba were, and now are again, an anarcho punk band.

Live Review: Chumbawumba, the Rage, March 23, 1998
Suddenly people who wouldn't give a crusty anarchist the time of day are singing "Tubthumping" and pumping their fists like a right bunch of yobs.
I've finally figured out what Chumbawumba's agenda is: subversion through infiltration.
For over a decade the anarchist collective from Leeds known as Chumbawumba have walked it like they've talked it.

Pop anarchists, Chumbawumba, have added to the row over music on the web by producing a free, downloadable song which samples Eminem and Metallica, both of whom are opposed to file-sharing.
Chumbawumba say it's not the illegal downloading of songs, but the industry's obsession with 'dollars and pounds' which is 'killing music'.
Singer, Dunstan, says the opposition to music downloads is a case of "some of the richest pop stars in the world not being able to screw every last penny from their fans."

Chumbawumba also provides a bonus DVD chock full of re-mixes (like "Tubthumping" by the Flaming Lips) and extracts from the film about Chumbawumba, "Well Done, Now Sod Off."
And the members of Chumbawumba have proved they can do that, beginning in the '90s with their political pop and dance experiment.
Chumbawumba has made it through 18 years and more albums than there are punks at a protest rally.

Among the most engaging and misunderstood bands in popular music, Chumbawumba's sixteen-year career has been an inexhaustible quest to expose injustice in Britain and around the world.
Unlike fellow anarchists the Ex, whose politics are couched in a more demanding, often abrasive musical style, Chumbawumba's work has always fallen more on the side of pop than Punk -- the idea being to infect and eventually cripple the musical and political establishment by educating as many listeners as possible.
Despite this strategy, many were surprised to learn of the band's decision to sign with major label behemoth EMI in 1997, and subsequently flabbergasted by the Top-10 success of the single "Tubthumping." The hit put the band in the best position thus far to reach a wide audience with its radical message.

Wild Man Fischer, the Bubbleman and Robyn Hitchcock are all trotted out like mutant show ponies, and then, suddenly, without warning, something altogether unsettling and beautiful comes over the airwaves sounding like Negativland fucking with Crass.
It turns out to be one whole side of Chumbawumba's Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records.
Yes, the politics are still intact, but they're framed by such drippy mainstream music that no one's going to notice.
