St Michael's Church at Brough was built of sandstone in 1150 as a daughter church to that at Kirby Stephen.
The earliest parts of the church include the 67 foot long south wall, a window in the westernmost bay of the south wall, and the main doorway, with its Norman beakheads and chevrons.
On the floor near the stone pulpit is a tombstone in memory of Gabriel Vincent, Steward to Lady Anne Clifford, who restored the nearby Brough Castle in the 17th century.

Brough is a small town located on the A66 to the east of the county.
It is a twin village - the southern part, Church Brough, lies on a former Roman road and was the setting for the Norman Brough Castle (once the site of a Roman camp).
Church Brough contains St Michael's Church, built of sandstone in 1150, though most of today's church is 14th or 16th century.

In 1840, Elizabeth Brough's father, Richard Brough, had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (L.D.S. Church), and when Elizabeth was 13 years old she decided to join her father's new-found religion and became the first child of Richard Brough and Mary Horleston to join the L.D.S. Church.
Like Samuel Brough, Enoch Tipton may have also done something similar, for Enoch is listed in the 1870 Census as a "Farmer" and in the 1880 Census as a "Coal Miner." On 1 October 1872, Elizabeth gave birth to their second child, William Enoch, in Almy, Wyoming.
More research on the descendants of Elizabeth Brough and the ancestors and relatives of her two husbands is presently being conducted by Lezlie Ann Anderson and John M. Brough of the Richard Brough Family Organization (RBFO).

Mary Ann Brough Evans loved and honored her parents and was present at the death of both of her parents--Richard Brough, who died in 1873 in Trentham and was buried in the Parish Church of Dresdon, and Mary Horleston Brough, who died in 1879 in Longton and was buried at St. John's, Lane End, Longton.

The ancient route across the Pennines via Stainmore which crosses the Swindale Beck at Brough dates back to at least the bronze age and the Roman fort of Verteris led to the modern name of Brough (from Burgh - a fortification).
The 'modern' Norman castle so striking from the A66 dates back to William II and was given to Robert de Vipont in 1204.
Brough itself is divided into Church Brough - around the castle and church - and Market Brough.

Built around 1090 by King William II the Castle has a chequered and bloody history.
There is still enough to see to make it worthwhile taking a close look and the Castle makes a striking sight when seen from the A66 road.
