Churchill County was created in 1861 and named for Fort Churchill (which today is really in Lyon County), which had been named for General Sylvester Churchill, a Mexican War hero who was Inspector General of the U.S. Army in 1861.
Churchill County was not organized until 1864, and its county seats were Bucklands (1861-64)which is now in Lyon County, La Plata (1864-68), Stillwater (1868-1904) and Fallon (1904-present).
Churchill County is in northwestern Nevada in the southwestern United States.

Mineral County was carved out Esmeralda in 1911 shortly after the County seat of Esmeralda was moved to Goldfield in 1907.
In the county the population was spread out with 24.40% under the age of 18, 6.20% from 18 to 24, 22.50% from 25 to 44, 27.10% from 45 to 64, and 19.80% who were 65 years of age or older.

Churchill County was named from Fort Churchill in Lyon County which honors Brigadier General Sylvester Churchill of the Battle of Buena Vita, Mexico fame.

In March 2001, the Nevada State Health Division (NSHD) requested that the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) evaluate environmental risk factors that might be linked to children who had developed leukemia in the area of Fallon, Churchill County, Nevada.
The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection issued NPDES permits to 30 facilities (Table 1) in Churchill County, including the City of Fallon, the Fallon Naval Air Station, and some small dairies [8].
Because fish and duck consumption rates for Churchill County are not available for this evaluation, ATSDR used the EPA intake recommendations for recreational freshwater anglers and other extremely conservative assumptions (Appendix C) to calculate the estimated minimal concentration of total mercury that could result in exceeding the respective MRL [25].

Churchill County Nevada is one of the nine original counties that were created in 1861 when Nevada Territory was formed from the western lands of the Utah Territory.
The county was officially organized in 1864 and La Plata was established as its county seat; then came Stillwater in 1868, and finally Fallon in 1903, its current county seat.
The 2004 population estimates are 24,355 for the county.

The cluster of childhood leukemia cases was brought to the attention of Nevada public health officials in the late summer of 2000, when it was learned that five cases of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) had been diagnosed in Churchill County within a few months of each other.
This suggests that one case would be expected about every five years in Churchill County based on the size of the population.
Results from both the CDC and ATSDR studies were presented to the Churchill County community at town hall meetings in February 2003.

He was hired by John Sparks, later governor of Nevada, to protect his herds from thieves and troublemakers at a time when there was a range war between the sheepherders and cattlemen who were competing for open grazing lands in northern Nevada and southern Idaho.
