  Churchill College, Cambridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Churchill College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge and was founded in 1960 as the national and Commonwealth memorial to Winston Churchill.
Churchill is situated on the outskirts of the town away from the traditional centre of old Cambridge, but close to the University’s main new development zone.
Churchill was one of the first three men’s colleges to admit women in 1972; the others were King’s and Clare.

 The Squares: Russell Square
The south and west sides of Russell Square were developed between 1818 and 1825 by James Patching who had acquired the land as early as 1806.
There is a passageway linking to Regency Square which is seen in the film of Graham Greene's "Brighton Rock", as is a view of the south side of the square in the opening credits.
Like Regency Square, title to the enclosure passed to Brighton Corporation under the 1884 Act, but access was still restricted to residents up until the outbreak of World War II, when the railings were removed and an air raid shelter was dug at the eastern end.

A $144 million redevelopment was transforming Churchill Square into one of the largest shopping centers on the south coast of England — and presenting it with the challenge of attracting vastly greater numbers of shoppers.

The new square was fairly full of people sitting on concrete steps eating lunches during noon hour, but most all of them left by 1 p.m.
To be fair, a square is not a park - and city officials have long voiced that view.

The British Sail Training Association schooner Sir Winston Churchill is a 150.3 foot three-masted topsail schooner built in 1966 in Hessel, Yorkshire, England for the British STA to serve as a youth training vessel which could represent Britain in the Tall Ships Races.
The Sir Winston Churchill caused quite a sensation when she showed up with an all girl crew of trainees in the 1972 Tall Ships Race.

In 2002, organizers of the square project referred to the fact it would be renamed Capital City Plaza, with part of that being called Sir Winston Churchill Square (complete with the well-known statue).
There is so much opposition to the square revamping that the name, Churchill Square, has taken on negative connotations.
Flint notes original plans were to move the statue to another corner of the plaza and rename the whole outdoor facility, but his group lobbied against that.

One of my biggest beefs with the Sir Winston Churchill Square revitalization project is the big yearly cost to run it after it has been revamped.
That was more than five times what it had cost to operate the older, less snazzy downtown Churchill Square.
Bureaucrats now also claim it will cost more than twice as much to pay for the security of the square: $90,157.86, compared to their $40,000 estimate last year.

The slouching bulldog figure of Sir Winston Churchill greets visitors on the northwest corner of the downtown square, a meeting place for E-towners for years.
In 2004, the square underwent a series of renovations which transformed the area into something city officials hope will be more amenable to the festivals.
Not much grass on the premises like there used to be, although city officials would have argued that countless activities on the square played havoc with the turf anyway.
