After the Norman Conquest the ceorls were reduced to a condition of servitude, and the word translates the villanus of Domesday Book, although it also covers classes other than the villani.
Taking a less technical sense than the ceorl of Anglo-Saxon law, churl, or cherl was used in general to mean a "man," and more particularly a "husband." In this sense it was employed about 1000 in a translation of the New Testament to render the word avitp (John iv.
It was then employed to describe a "peasant," and gradually began to denote undesirable qualities.
A churl, in its earliest Anglo-Saxon meaning, was simply "a man", but the word soon came to mean "a non-servile peasant", still spelled ceorle, and denoting the lowest rank of freemen.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary it later came to mean the opposite of the nobility and royalty, "a common person".
The word ceorle in a corrupted form is frequently found in British place names, in towns such as Carlton and Charlton, meaning "the farm of the churls".
The term ‘churl’, as Chaucer uses it, is more pejorative than 8216;peasant’;, and appears to refer to manners and lifestyle as much as social origin.
The Reeve is a rich man, but is referred to by Geoffrey as a churl, whereas the Yeoman, also a servant working on a rural estate, is not.The Parson, who as a member of the clergy may be exempt from churl status, is the brother of an agricultural labourer.
Yeoman, Ploughman (not called a churl either) and Parson are all good, honest men, whereas the Reeve and the Manciple are not.

With this view, he wrote four books on Epictetus,--a life, which is now unhappily lost; a book of conversation or "table talk," which is also lost; and two books which have come down to us, viz.
At that critical moment the necessity of a temporary dictatorship, which sometimes secures the safety of a state, banished all reflections on the consequences of such a power, and nobody seemed to think glory incompatible with personal liberty.
There was something vague in his ambitious aspirations; and he was, if I may so express myself, fond of building those imaginary edifices called castles in the air.

DM: Bitter churl of reality slaps Kornegay flat(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Until I returned to Ole Miss this semester, I fancied thoughts of staying in school for as long as possible.
I had tasted the bitter churl of reality in the 9-to-5 world this summer, and I was anxious to return to the nurturing manna that full-time studentdom provided.
I wanted to stay in school because I have yet to find the answer to the only question on the big final exam: What are you going to do after college?
