Chusan Palm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chusan Palm Trachycarpus fortunei is native to central and eastern China, where it is one of the hardiest palm species in the world.
This brings it into a climate not only with cold winters, but also cool, moist summers; while Rhapidophyllum can tolerate slightly lower temperatures in winter, it needs much greater summer heat to grow successfully.
The Chusan Palm has been cultivated in China and Japan for thousands of years, grown for its coarse but very strong leaf fibre, used for making ropes, sacks, and other coarse cloth where great strength is important.

The malaria problem on Chusan had been even worse than that of Hong Kong, and Plenipotentiary Charles Elliot disregarded his superior's instructions on keeping the island so as to effect a quick end to the war before the occupying forces had been completely decimated by disease.
A memorial stood for a long time on Chusan, and it is believed, according to a Royal Asiatic Society expedition to the island some years before, that it had been replaced by a more plain memorial actually erected by the People's Liberation Army.

 Chapter 3: Trachycarpus key
The Chusan palm's hardiness was not realised for a long time and, indeed, the first specimen was grown for many years in the palm house at Kew because it was considered tropical!
The 'Chusan palm' is considered to be a native of 'central and eastern' China, but has been so widely cultivated there for thousands of years that its precise origins have long ago been obscured.
In favoured localities with regular watering, the Chusan palm can produce a foot of trunk a year and reports of twice this growth rate are probably not exaggerated.

In 1949 and 1950 when the Himalaya and the slightly smaller Chusan entered service with P&O, it was a sure sign that the company was getting back into its stride after the long years of disruption during, and immediately following, the Second World War.
Resplendent in their white livery the two ships continued the the tradition which had been started with the Straths almost 20 years previously, but the two new liners seemed somehow to have more individuality, and they were an instant success with the travelling pubic.
Over the next 20 years, as Britain withdrew from Empire and the pattern changed, the two ships retained their popularity and in the late 1950s, with the introduction of services into the Pacific Ocean, they became familiar and well loved ships in the West Coast ports of the USA.

China might not be very willing to hand the island over to an unpleasant neighbour, without getting any return for it, as indeed she might easily be obliged to do, but she might do so more willingly to Germany from whom she has no injury to fear, in return for a suitable price.
The island of Chusan was shown to be the most suitable for the purpose, as it has a safe harbour, Tinghai, in a good position for trade, but hard to approach.
As regards this, a remark by Sir Frank Lascelles, the British Ambassador in St. Petersburg, as reported by our Ambassador, indicates that England would raise no objection if Russia were to annex a part of Northern China for the sake of her railway and some port in Korea.
