		Ciba CEO Armin Meyer said in a statement: "The first half of 2001 saw weak markets in the specialty chemicals industry, amidst a general slowdown in the global economy.
		Ciba said it will cut 450 jobs by the end of 2002 as it expects the market for specialty chemicals to contract this year rather than grow two percent as it had originally forecast.
		Ciba was able to pay down 40 percent of its debt last year.
