 Sonic Youth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In their early career, Sonic Youth were associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City, but have outlasted most associated bands.
Part of the first wave of American post-punk groups, Sonic Youth carried out their interpretation of the punk rock ethos throughout the evolving American indie underground (as the title of their documentary 1991: The Year Punk Broke demonstrates) that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound.
While Sonic Youth comes from a different background than the typical jam band (punk/post-punk as opposed to psychedelic), their approach to this background is similar to the jam bands approach to their own.

 Tiny Mix Tapes Music Reviews: Sonic Youth Music Review
Geffen's decision to reissue Sonic Youth's debut self-titled EP concurrently with Ciccone Youth's The Whitey Album and Thurston Moore's Psychic Hearts was a curious one.
And while the Ciccone Youth record poked fun at Top 40 radio dreck, Moore, freed from the constraints of recording with a well-established band, takes the opportunity to commit to tape some of his most pop-inflected recordings to date.
By no means signaling the end of Sonic Youth's career, the new record instead shows the band veering ever so slightly back toward the edginess and unpredictability that helped to make their early efforts so original and groundbreaking.

More of a good-natured prank than an actual band, Ciccone Youth was a short-lived vehicle in which indie underground noisemakers Sonic Youth further explored their obsession with popular culture.
In the mid-'80s, the members of Sonic Youth (especially Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon) made no secret of their fascination with Madonna; they were known to discuss her life and career in interviews, and the album EVOL listed "Madonna, Sean, and I" as an alternate title for the closing tune "Expressway to Yr.
Released by Watt's New Alliance label under the name Ciccone Youth (in honor of Madonna's surname), the single became an underground success, and a widespread (but unconfirmed) rumor had it that Madonna herself persuaded Warner Bros. not to take legal action against the record for unauthorized use of her sampled voice.

 TrouserPress.com :: Sonic Youth
Sonic Youth, unlike so many of the noise bands that formed in New York at the beginning of the '80s, has had the fortitude to hold on long enough to develop its ideas well beyond the original stances.
While the band was capable of rocking with purpose, the overall tone on the early records is a diffuse, hovering anxiety, a vague sense of impending doom.
During this early period, Sonic Youth was intimately connected with the noisy remnants of the New York no wave scene, inspired by the dense guitar tapestries of Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca, with whom Moore and Ranaldo had both played.

Sonic Youth's accomplishments are vast and thus difficult to boil down to a single sentence, but here's a stab: SY took the abstract, often cerebral experimentalism of academic music and avant-garde jazz and made it punk.
No discussion of Sonic Youth would be complete without some mention of Ciccone Youth, a bizarro side project the group launched around this time to pay twisted tribute to pop chart-topper Madonna (Ciccone is, of course, the Material Girl's surname).
Surprisingly slim by Sonic Youth standards at only seven songs, Murray Street is to the band's late '90s' output as Goo was to their late '80s output, consolidating the reflective ambient rock sprawl of recent years into tight, focused song-based pieces marked by surprisingly crisp, mellow guitar work and only occasional fireworks.

Beyond the requisite history lesson and catalogue gap-filling, the triad's dropped in anticipation of the band's 15th studio album, Rather Ripped, which is out in June, and maybe as a nod to Ecstatic Peace!, Moore's excellent experimental and noise label, teaming with Universal.
Packaged with extensive (and worthwhile) liner notes from Byron Coley, Glenn Branca, original Sonic Youth drummer Richard Edson, and a note from Moore regarding the relation of reggae and Can to the tracks contained therein, Sonic Youth is also bolstered by seven live tracks and an early demo, all from 1981.
