It is not likely that these rearrangements have been relevant to their evolution, since changes in the structure or size of chromosomes have not modified the diploid nor the fundamental chromosome numbers of their populations and, for this reason, their reproductive isolation has been probably brought about by other means.

Cichlids of the New World, Introduction and Part One by Dean Hougen
Cichlasoma is thought by most aquarists to include fish found from southern Texas all through Central America and down to Argentina -- fish as diverse as Festivums, Jack Dempseys, Firemouths, and Severums.
These former Cichlasoma species will be covered in the second and third parts of this series as they fall into what scientists call 'Cichlasomine group A' - - a group more distantly related to the members of the restricted Cichlasoma than are species of Aequidens or even Nannacara.
Aequidens species greatly resemble Cichlasoma species; the members of both genera are generalized omnivores, range from four to six inches or so standard length (excluding the tail fin), and have a similar body shape.

The only inhabitants of that tank is a pair of Cichlasoma amazonarum, a fish closely related to the type species of that genus, Cichlasoma bimaculatum, but showing a more colorfull dress when spawning.
Cichlasoma amazonarum benefits a target fish at breeding time, but fishes belonging to the same species fishes may be badly molested.
In my opinion, Cichlasoma amazonarum are the perfect cichlid, not too aggressive but enough to take care of themselves with more aggressive fishes.

Fishery Bulletin; 1/1/2002; Lorenz, Jerome J. Abstract--Mayan cichlids (Cichlasoma urophthalmus) were collected monthly from March 1996 to October 1997 with hook-and-line gear at Taylor River, Florida, an area within the Crocodile Sanctuary of Everglades National Park, where human activities such as fishing are prohibited.
Fish were aged by examining thin-sectioned otoliths, and past size-at-age information was generated by using back-calculation techniques.
