Ciconiiformes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The flamingo family, Phoenicopteridae, is related, and is sometimes classed as part of the Ciconiiformes.
Ciconiiformes have only a single pair of sternotracheal muscles in the syrinx; 16-20 cervical vertebrae; are diastataxic (the fifth secondary feather is absent, but fifth secondary covert is present); the feet are not webbed; the middle claw is laterally expanded, (pectinate in some families); intestinal ceca present, nearly always very small.
Ciconiiformes are primarily occupy fresh water or terrestrial habitat, they are not filter feeders, and mostly feed on fish, crustaceans, insects, and carrion.

The Ciconiiformes (Bitterns, Egrets, Herons, Ibises and Storks)
The Ciconiiformes is an order that has recently suffered many changes as a result of Sibley and Monroe's DNA based phylogeny, and it now contains 29 families and 1027 species.
It is a crying shame then to learn that over 20 percent of the Ciconiiformes are in danger and nearly all have suffered great reductions in numbers over the last century, some species have wild populations of less than 100 and several have not been seen for a number of years.
The main cause for concern is habitat destruction as wetland habitats are among the often drained, either intentionally in order to gain access to the soil for human use or accidentally as a result of poor management of the area as a water resource for an ever growing human population.

Ardeidae   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The degree of sociality of the Ciconiiformes, especially the Ardeidae, seems to reflect differences in foraging strategy (Smith, 437).
By nesting in mixed colonies, Ciconiiformes derive the same antipredator benefits without the cost of intense competition for nesting and food resources (Bildstein,59).
Sibling rivalry, which is referred to as "siblicide," was only detected in chicks that live on monopolizably small food which catalyzes their competitive instincts (Mock et al,1386; Gill,443).

The epizootiology of eustrongylidosis in wading birds (Ciconiiformes) in Florida -- Spalding et al.
This parasite was estimated to cause at least 80% mortality among nestling ciconiiforms at one colony in Everglades National Park, and was found in 15% of nestling ardeids throughout the state.
Despite wide sampling efforts, infected fish (second intermediate hosts) were only found at six sites in Florida, all of which had been physically altered, such as with canals and ditches, and had an anthropogenic (human-caused) source of nutrient pollution.
