Zero was repaired and now is a Maverick Hunter and is a good friend of Mega Man X.
Zero has dedicated his life to pacifism, and is known as a great hero alongside Mega Man X. Many years after the Mega Man X series, he was ressurected by Ciel using a Cyber-elf called Passy.
Zero was originally intended to be the star of Mega Man X, according to Keiji Inafune, Mega Man's creator.

Mega Man Zero is touted as being the “most challenging Mega Man game yet”, and many see it as “A cross between Mega Man X and games like Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night”, which both sound very nice, but are really only half true.
Mega Man Zero probably could have been a much better game if its designers hadn't intentionally set out to make it difficult, resulting in a game often more frustrating than fun.

Mega Man Zero was a great game for the Game Boy Advance, and more importantly, the start of an all new series within the Mega Man universe.
Zero soon meets the new leader of the resistance, Elpizo, a former Neo Arcadian, and he apparently has the proper leadership skills to motivate the resistance to victory over Neo Arcadia.
Mega Man Zero 2 is a worthy addition into the blue bomber's portfolio, and is another step at extending this great new Mega Man series.
