Cigarette Smoking Man - X-Files Wiki - a Wikia wiki
His smoking was used to verify his presence on various occasions, such as in Krycek's car in August 1994 (TXF: "Ascension"), in Skinner's office in November 1994 (TXF: "One Breath"), in the 2400 Court Motel in May 1996 (TXF: "Wetwired"), and in Diana Fowley's apartment in early 1999.
According to Frohike, the CSM was born on August 20, 1940 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
In the original script for the episode "Pilot," the character of Lake Drazen, an FBI agent, was the template for the Cigarette Smoking Man. Drazen was to have introduced Scully to Mulder, and be present at Mulder's slide-show presentation.

Cigarette Smoking Man - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cigarette Smoking Man oversaw Scully's initial briefing on her assignment to the X-Files to debunk the work of FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder, as well as her debriefing.
CSM's silent presence in Skinner's office early on was always a warning that the shadowy government attempting to discredit Mulder is again keeping an eye on the nonconformist agent.
CSM had a strained relationship with the rest of the Syndicate throughout the show, and there is evidence to suggest that he was never actually a full member of the Group.

The Smoking Man goes on to become the Machiavelli of this century, involved in every plot from murder of public figures to alien coverups to rigging the Olympics.
Having established in "Apocrypha" that the Smoking Man in 1953 was in his twenties or early thirties, and already working with Bill Mulder in the State Department, it is hard to reconcile Frohike's statement in "Musings" that the Smoking Man was born around 1940.

Tom Carissimi: "Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man" 4x07
The episode would ask you to believe that Cancer Man himself was personally responsible for several assassinations, including those of JFK and Dr. Martin Luther King, and most of the major events of the last 3 decades.
But when I looked a little deeper, what I saw was an empty shell of a man, a man who long ago traded in his morals, his ethics and his opportunity for a normal life for a little power.
In Cancer Man's case, I would suspect that the muses from whom he desired inspiration were Clio, the muse of history and Melpomene - muse of tragedy.

Frohike pieces together and recites to Mulder and Scully what could be the possible life story of the Cigarette Smoking Man; from a young captain in the US Army recruited to assassinate President Kennedy, to becoming the mysterious man in the shadows at the height of a global conspiracy.
This episode contradicts the season 2 episode 'Apocrypha' where young CSM was seen in the 1950's with Bill Mulder as already a shadowy agent and smoking.
THe scene in the alley where CSM definds his philosiphy of life to a deranged homeless lady is one of the pinnicles of television drama.

Commentary on "Musings of a Cigarette-Smoking Man"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
'Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man', aired yesterday, was a unique narrative (Forrest Gump meets the X-files-- no hang on, that's 'Dark Skies') that didn't have Duchovny or Anderson (except that re-used footage from the pilot) and gives us the 'warm and fuzzy' CSM who wants to desperately be a writer.
Another problem with this episode is that it was hard to feel sympathy for the CSM character by the end of the episode.
Though the narrative did shed some light on a different side of his personality, he was still essentially the same person at the end of the episode as he was at the beginning.
