Oklahoma, as Indian Territory, served as the relocation area for the policy of Indian Removal started by Andrew Jackson in the 1830s; the end of the Cherokee Trail of Tears was Indian Territory.
In the 1880s, early settlers of the state's very sparsely populated Panhandle region tried to form the Cimarron Territory, but lost a lawsuit against the federal government, prompting a judge in Paris, Texas, to unintentionally create a moniker for the area.
It was to be the first of a number of land runs, but later land openings were conducted by means of a lottery due to widespread cheating - some of the settlers were called Sooners because they had already staked their land claims before the land was officially opened for settlement.

Described as being, "Terrific As All Creation", Cimarron is a decidedly slight movie important only for having won the 4th Academy Award and not for any staying power across the passage of decades.
Not only is Cimarron laughable, it's confusing about the central themes of social progress and it's hopelessly devoted to silent film forms and conventions.
In the end, Cimarron is a museum piece in the most pejorative sense of the term.
