In 1890 the Cimbalom was nationalized as the instrument of Hungary.
The Cimbalom may be described as a 125 stringed instrument on a soundbox, mounted on removable legs.

The cymbalum, cymbalom, cimbalom (most common spelling), ţambal, tsymbaly, tsimbl, santouri, or santur is a musical instrument found mainly in the music of Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Greece and Iran.
In Hungary, the larger, concert cimbalom, comparable in pitch range (and weight) to a small piano—but still normally played with beaters—was first developed by József Schunda in the 1870s.
Cimbalom was used in the film score for the movie In the Heat of the Night (1967).

The Cimbalom was sampled in stereo at 24 bits/44k into a Alesis ML9600 High Resolution Master Disc Recorder using a stero pair of Nuemann KM 184 mics into a Grace Design 201 mic preamp.
Two dynamic levels (mezzoforte and forte) were recorded as well as a set of dampered notes for each note of the Cimbalom.
Kontakt Instruments were created in the following categories: Cimbalom-forte / Cimbalom mezzoforte / Cimbalom - dampered / Cimbalom - velocity switched between mezzoforte and forte / Cimbalom mf and ff velocity switch with the dampered samples mixed in by modulation wheel settings.

Versions of this instrument are recorded in Europe and the Middle East throughout recorded history.
In Eastern Europe a larger descendant of the hammered dulcimer called the cimbalom is also played which has been used by a number of classical composers, including Zoltan Kodaly and Igor Stravinsky.

In 1990-96 alone, he was featured with the Montreal Symphony in Carnegie Hall, the New York Philharmonic, the San Antonio, Boston, Rochester, and St. Louis Symphonies, the Philadelphia, Chautauqua Festival, and Minnesota Orchestras, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Summit Brass, Apsen Chamber Orchestra, Tanglewood Contemporary Music Festival, and the Chicago Symph ony Orchestra.
Most recently, he recorded Renard and Ragtime (two works which feature the cimbalom) by Igor Stravinsky with conductor Hugh Wolff and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, released on the Teldec label in April of 1996.

Jan Rokyta studied to play the cimbalom with Ludmila Dadáková at the Conservatory of Music in Bratislava (Slovakia) and the recorder with Walter van Hauwe and Paul Leenhouts at the Sweelinck Academy of Music in Amsterdam.

KÁLMÁN BALOGH is an internationally celebrated cimbalom (hammered dulcimer) artist who, in the gypsy musical tradition, is a versatile performer accomplished on the Hungarian concert cimbalom as well as in the folk and jazz idioms.
Joining Ökrös for the tour is Kálmán Balogh, master of the Gypsy cimbalom, a version of the hammer dulcimer that resembles a small piano with no keys.

That suggested to me that it may have a Moravian source, which is a Protestant group from what is now the Czech Republic.
Paul Gifford mentions Moravia in his book and suggests that the early Moravian designs had some influence on the Hungarian Concert Cimbalom (page 189, "Hammered Dulcimer", Paul M. Gifford, Scarecrow Press, 2001).
These nationals were also imported to Pennsylvania for coal and steel work, and have cimbalom traditions, so it makes sense.

It has a Hungarian/Balkan flavor but done with the soft sweet sounds of the cimbalom, a beautiful instrument.
Having had the privilege of hearing Kalman Balough perform in a live informal setting, I was unable to resist purchasing this album.
Cimbalom music is quite unusual, being a struck instrument, and Kalman is absolutely wonderful.

Speaking as a player of this instrument, I too must agree that the article should be moved to "cimbalom," which is the correct Hungarian spelling.
One could also argue for "ţambal" or any of the other versions from the languages of the countries where the instrument developed.
Note that the pronunciation is not like "cymbal" in English, but rather more like /tsimbalom/, which can be seen in the other variations of the name.

As mentioned before, it is simply the sound board from an old up-right piano.
An MP3 would be awesome, and a vid showing how to play it would be cool too...
Our church had an old upright piano that they were getting rid of, so we took it, ripped all the unneeded stuff off, and were left with a cimbalom.
