Plate tectonics (from the Greek word for "one who constructs", τεκτων, tekton) is a theory of geology developed to explain the phenomenon of continental drift, and is currently the theory accepted by the vast majority of scientists working in this area.
Plate tectonic theory arose out of two separate geological observations: continental drift, noticed in the early 20th century, and seafloor spreading, noticed in the 1960s.
Tectonic plates are comprised of two types of lithosphere: continental and oceanic lithospheres; for example, the African Plate includes the continent and parts of the floor of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

During Late Precambrian and the Palaeozoic, the Indian continent, bounded to the north by the Cimmerian Superterranes, was part of Gondwana and was separated from Eurasia by the Paleotethys Ocean (Fig.
In the Early Carboniferous, an early stage of rifting is observed between the Indian continent and the Cimmerian Superterranes.
In the Upper Cretaceous (84 Ma), the Indian plate began its very rapid northward drift at an average speed of 16 cm/year, covering a distance of about 6000 km, until the collision of the northwestern part of the Indian passive margin with Eurasia in the lower Eocene (48-52 Ma).

The Cimmerians then arrive, and use their molecular control technology to transport the Doctor, Charley and the dead Cimmerian down through several feet of solid rock; this is how the Cimmerian escaped from the lounge without opening the door.

By Early Permian time, the Cimmerian plate rifted away from Gondwana and headed towards Laurasia, with a new ocean forming in its southern end, the Tethys Ocean, and the closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean.
The Cimmerian Plate was still travelling across the shrinking Paleo-Tethys, until the Middle Jurassic Time.
The African Plate started to change directions, from west to northwest toward Europe, and South America began to move in a northward direction separating it from Antarctica, allowing complete oceanic circulation around Antarctica for the first time, causing a rapid cooling of the continent and allowing glaciers to form.

Where an oceanic plate collides with a continental plate, the oceanic plate tips down and slides beneath the continental plate forming a deep ocean trench (long, narrow, deep basin.) An example of this type of movement, called subduction, occurs at the boundary between the oceanic Nazca Plate and the continental South American Plate.
Plate tectonics, the branch of science that deals with the process by which rigid plates are moved across hot molten material, has helped to explain much in global-scale geology including the formation of mountains, and the distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes.
Perhaps the most important role of plate tectonics is that it is a guide to the use of finer techniques for earthquake prediction.

Therefore, we propose that the relationship between global plate motions and local microplate kinematics is, at best, indirect, whereas a direct connection exists between variations of relative velocity fields of the major plates and the local deformation pattern as expressed by microplate formation and subsequent motion.
However, the Cimmerian rift model requires that an eastward widening of the ocean formed as a result of the counterclockwise rotation of the Cimmerian blocks as they were subducted towards the Eurasian margin.
In particular, attention is focused on the formation of new plate boundaries in the Tethys realm in response to temporal variations of the velocity field between the large surrounding plates.

In particular, the causes of the initial stages of Pangea dispersal, prior to the onset of continental drifting in the early Jurassic, have been widely debated and are grouped into two main issues: post “Variscan-Alleghenian” orogenic collapse and the broad effects of a mantle superplume.
Using a simple plate tectonic model that accounts for the geodynamic linkages between the features we propose a kinematic evolution to explain the origin of Pangean dispersal.
The process thus initiated was arrested when the Pangean global plate broke into two plates during the opening of the Neotethys ocean.

South-dipping subduction beneath the oceanic rock of the leading edge of the Indian Plate would have continued until Kohistan sutured to Asia, after which a new, north-dipping, subduction zone located on the south side of the arc would have been initiated, remaining active until early Tertiary collision between continental India and the arc.

First, a small slice known as the Cimmerian continent split off in the Permo-Triassic and moved north to collide with previously accreted Asia in the Mid-Jurassic, leaving the Paleo-Tethys seaway in its wake.
In between are fragments of the Cimmerian continent: the Lut and Dasht-I-Margo/Afghan blocks to the west, the Lhasa block to the east, and an unnamed, poorly known block north of the Main Karakoram Thrust and south of the Pamirs.
Between 20 Ma and the present, continuing northward movement was accompanied by clockwise rotation of the Indian subcontinent, leading to the formation of the Himalaya Mountains rimming India on the north, the Hindu Kush ranges to the northwest, and the highly deformed suture zone between the Dasht-I-Margo and Indian platforms.
