Cinderella - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Forced into a life of domestic servitude, hence the nickname, as she was forced to tend the fireplace, Cinderella accepts the help of her attendant spirit ("fairy godmother") who transforms her to attend a royal ball and attract the attention of the handsome prince.
Cinderella is oppressed, and does nothing about it; a magical event takes her to a powerful prince who is so taken with her appearance that he chooses her as his consort (it is assumed that she will accede), decorative, but existing only as an adjunct to him.

Cinderella (1950 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the film, a young girl abused by her stepmother and step-sisters is still able to go the ball and win her prince, with the help of a fairy godmother, a half dozen mice, and a pumpkin.
The film was directed by Clyde Geronomi, Hamilton Luske and Wilfred Jackson, adapted from the fairy tale "Cinderella", drawing primarily from the version by Charles Perrault.
Cinderella was the first full-bodied feature produced by the studio since Bambi in 1942; World War II and low box office returns had forced Walt Disney to produce a series of inexpensive package films such as The Three Caballeros, Make Mine Music and Fun and Fancy Free for the duration of the 1940s.

A lot of messages in "Cinderella"
While the 1950 animated film might be the first thing that comes to millions of minds when Cinderella is mentioned, the story of the woebegone girl existed in folklore long before Disney turned it into his most popular character save Mickey Mouse himself.
Perhaps the most familiar versions of the story in the Western Hemisphere are "Cinderella," which was written in the 17th century by Charles Perrault, the author of the "Mother Goose Tales" and "Aschenputtel" — yet another name for the girl — published by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm in their 19th century collection of 200 folktales.
For instance, he incorporates a scene from the Grimms' story in which Cinderella — neglected by her father and abused by her stepmother and her daughters — visits the grave of her birth mother and plants a twig that grows into a tree.

However Cinderella's fairy godmother steps in and magically creates another for her, as well as transforming a pumpkin into a coach and the farmyard animals into coachmen, so that she can attend.
The most noticeable variation is in having - this, remember, is a Disney film - the mice that get transformed into the coachmen and horses, plus most of the farmyard animals, able to speak to Cinderella and be her best friends.
Cinderella is another of Disney's eternal virgin princesses who radiates an almost divine beatitude and kindness but is utterly bland as a character - she lacks the essential open-eyed plaintiveness and adorable cuteness that makes other Disney heroines such as Snow White, Lady, Beauty and Ariel memorable.

Cinderella: The importance and popularity of the fairytale - www.ezboard.com
"Cinderella" isn't high on my personal list of favorite tales, but my own theory is that America loves a good make-over (now, we even have them with plastic surgery!), and the sudden (and sometimes magical) change from drudge to "pretty as a princess" is a pretty good, dramatic make-over.
I chose this one primarily because it is the version that Walt Disney adapted for the 1950 film release.
Also, note that Cinderella is the only blonde in the entire kingdom, to judge from the ballroom scene, thus suggesting that to be blonde is to be the most beautiful.

Cinderella herself is sugary sweet, and while she may not be the ideal role model for young girls in today's world of strong women, she is likeable and she shows us the value of friendship, hope, and faith.
