  Cinderella Man (2005): Reviews
Cinderella Man is not a movie about boxing, but about this boxer who personified the heart and hope of 1935.
Cinderella Man's key emotional moments feel as if they've been predigested for an audience that can't be trusted to feel things for itself but needs to be firmly albeit lovingly pointed in the appropriate direction.
I thought Cinderella Man was one of the best movies of the year and it is a true travisty that it was not nominated in many of the awards programs.

Cinderella Man - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cinderella Man is a 2005 American Academy Award-nominated drama film titled after the nickname and inspired by the real life story of former Heavyweight boxing champion, James J. Braddock.
Fighting with permanent injuries to his hands, Braddock continues to win and before long he comes to represent the hopes and aspirations of the American public coping with the Depression.
Dubbed the "Cinderella Man," in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, he would eventually defeat the seemingly invincible Max Baer to become the heavyweight champion of the world.

 "Cinderella Man" - Salon
Ron Howard's "Cinderella Man," which tells the inherently gripping story of James J. Braddock (played by Russell Crowe), an impoverished prizefighter who turned his luck around to become the world heavyweight champ during the Depression, can't just be a boxing movie, or even a movie about an interesting, principled guy who became a boxing legend.
"Cinderella Man" is a movie about the indomitability of the American spirit, and those are always far less interesting than movies about actual people.
But "Cinderella Man" -- possibly a slight improvement on the dorkily cloying "Million Dollar Baby," but not by much -- is what passes for an American boxing movie these days.

Cinderella Man: (Thomas Newman) In what promises to provide the first sure-fire Oscar buzz of 2005, Cinderella Man reunites the star and major crew of A Beautiful Mind for a historical sports film with attention to detail as its knockout ally.
While the bravado and large-scale crescendos of Angels in America and his other recent successes are not present in the vast majority of Cinderella Man, the score is built on a solid orchestral foundation worthy of the era.
Overall, on album, Cinderella Man features less than 30 minutes of score, with the cues (sometimes beginning with the sound effects of crowd noise) often exiting as quickly as they enter.

Cinderella Man - Scathing Reviews for Bitchy People
Cinderella Man tracks the true-life story of James J. Braddock (Russell Crowe), an on-the-rise boxer in the late 1920s, who not only loses his fortunes, but — plagued by injuries and a weak left jab — his career’s upward trajectory when the Depression hits in 1929.
Indeed, Cinderella Man may be the first film in the history of the Harvard Square Theater not involving the Red Sox, Matt Damon, or Michael Moore to rouse the normally dour, cynical Cambridge-area intellectual elites into actual fucking applause.
Somehow, Crowe imbues a man whose profession it is to beat other people into pulp with quiet gravitas, creating (with a pitch-perfect 1930s Jersey accent) a character with a glower that is part humble and part menacing but entirely riveting.

The title Cinderella Man was originally coined by classic New York journalist Damon Runyan, who is cited at the film's start as calling James Braddock the ultimate human interest story.
It soon becomes clear that this isn't a movie about a man trying to recover honor or glory, or a boxer trying to defeat the bad guy (though Baehr is rightly portrayed as a self-serving "killer and clown," but he's not a murderer or evil).
Cinderella Man is rated PG-13 for "some language," but there's actually a lot of it, which you might expect from a movie set in the streets and boxing rings of New York and New Jersey.

Baer still has living relatives who are having to watch a man they knew and loved and who died of a heartattack at a relatively young age, turned into a pantomime villian to suit the scriptwriters.

Cinderella Man is a terrific boxing picture, but there's no great need for another one.
The need it fills is for a full-length portrait of a good man. Most serious movies live in a world of cynicism and irony, and most good-hearted movie characters live in bad movies.
Here is a movie where a good man prevails in a world where every day is an invitation to despair, where resentment would seem fully justified, where doing the right thing seems almost gratuitous, because nobody is looking and nobody cares.
