Blackman’s layered, gauze-like attire, bassist George Mitchel’s thick dreads and nose piercing, and piano/keyboardist Carlton Holms’ euro-chic, technophile garb immediately signify a departure from conventional jazz’s traditional jacket and tie presentation.
Yet surveying Blackman’s set-up before she took the stage for last Thursday’s show at the club Blues Alley, it was somehow apparent before hearing a single ping from Blackman’s wide, dimpled ride, that it was prepared to provide a penetrating ring replete with rich, rolling overtones.
Blackman’s comping demonstrated an unusual ability to maintain precise time while keeping almost solo-like swirls of alternate voicing and rhythmic change flowing behind her band’s soloists, without overwhelming or disrupting the free development of their ideas.

Cindy Blackman, whose debut on disc predated Ibarras’s by nearly a decade, probably experienced ambivalence toward her skills on similar grounds.
Blackman exercises welcome restraint on many of them, recognizing the value in abetting her colleagues with steady accents and asides rather than bowling them over with obvious and easy bombast.
Standouts include the press roll extravaganza of “Spank” and the delicate brush ornaments of “Missing You.” Hearing Blackman put her kit through the paces it’s easy to wish that she would quit her current lucrative gig as drummer with British Soul diva Joss Stone and assemble another band of her own.

Blackman is consistent regardless of the context: consistently propulsive, in the manner bequeathed to her by the departed legend Tony Williams.
She can, in fact, nail late-era Williams with uncanny precision (an awe-inspiring experience), but her group is self-consciously modeled after an earlier period, the last days of the second great Miles Davis Quintet.
