CinePaint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CinePaint is a computer program to paint on and retouch bitmap frames of movies.
Features that set CinePaint apart from its photo-editing predecessor are the frame manager, the possibility to do onion skinning, and to work with 16-bit and floating point pixels for HDR.
CinePaint supports an 16-bit throughout colour managed workflow for photographers and printers, including CIE*Lab and CMYK editing.

CinePaint is a spin-off project of the GIMP which resulted from different design goals.
CinePaint supports image formats with up to 32-bit per channel color depths while the GIMP is limited to 8-bit color depths.
CinePaint's advanced image handling goes far beyond the needs of the average brickfilmer, but its direct support of data formats used by high-end graphics cards may make it more useful in years to come.

Debian -- cinepaint   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
CinePaint is a painting and image retouching program designed to work best with 35mm film and other high resolution high dynamic range images.
The 32-bit per channel color range of CinePaint appeals to 35mm cinematographers and professional still photographers because film scanners are capable of greater color bit-depth than can be displayed on an 8-bit per channel monitor or can be manipulated in typical programs.
However, CinePaint is a general-purpose tool useful for working on images for motion pictures, print, and the Web.

CinePaint can be thought of as a Linux Photoshop - but designed for frame sequences rather than layers of a single frame and absolutely critically it runs at 48 bit rgb, (16 bit colour depth) rather than just the 8 bit colour that GIMP supports.
CinePaint is now the most popular open source tool in the motion picture industry, but ironically, comments Rowe, CinePaint is not behind the switch to Linux.
CinePaint is used for a lot of retouching, but it is only now just starting to appeal to matte painters.

Cinepaint does have 16bit support but is not as good as the new Gimp 1.3.x for photo retouching and editing.
Still photographers can think of CinePaint as having many more F-stops of range, of being capable of capturing much more subtle nuances of color in a vast blue sky for instance.
I said that CinePaint DOES have 16bit support, but is not suitable for photo work as much as Gimp 1.3x is. They have removed a number of Gimp features in order to make it more suitable for movies instead.
