Cinecolor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
It was developed by the Cinecolor Corporation, and was in use from 1930 to 1938 as a competitor to Technicolor.
While Cinecolor could produce vibrant oranges, blues, and flesh tones, it was notorious for not being able to properly replicate bright greens (rendered grey) and purples (rendered fl).
Nevertheless, Cinecolor was used extensively by the film industry, particularly in animation, where Walt Disney held an exclusive contract to use three-strip Technicolor from 1932 until the end of 1935.

 Cinecolor - The Wordbook Encyclopedia
Cinecolor was an early subtractive color-model two color film process, based upon the Prizma system of the 1910s and 1920s and the Multicolor system of the late 1920s and 1930s.
While Cinecolor could produce vibrant reds, oranges, blues, browns and flesh tones, its renderings of other colors were often muted, such as bright greens (rendered dark green) and purples (rendered a sort of dark magenta).
Cinecolor was also prominently employed in Paramount's Popular Science actuality shorts (though many of these are credited with having been filmed in the similar, earlier Magnacolor process, and even a "New Magnacolor" process of the late 1940s).

Cinecolor took the Multicolor system and continued to use it with little or no modification until the late 1940s when Eastman color negative and Ansco color made it possible to obtain three color photographs without the use of the Technicolor three strip camera.
Cinecolor Corporation came into being in 1932 as a result of the financial failure of Multicolor Corp. Technicolor and Multicolor were, by far, the two most successful two-color processes throughout the late 1920s.
Cinecolor resulted in not only a limited palette, it also suffered from other problems that were decidedly inferior to the Technicolor system.

Cinecolor entailed shooting a bi-pack of two fl and white negatives placed emulsion to emulsion in the camera gate.
Curiously, some Super Cinecolor films were still color designed with the original process in mind and the use of these colors tended to be subdued.
Because of the types of dyes used, purples tended to be quite vibrant and the colors were generally good but lacked the rich fls and contrast of a dye transfer Technicolor print.

Cinecolor is an early subtractive color-model two color film process, based upon the Prizmacolor system of the 1910s and 1920s and the Multicolor system of the late 1920s and 1930s.
Although limited in tone by comparison, Cinecolor's chief advantages over Technicolor were that color rushes were available within 24 hours and that the process itself only cost 25 percent more than fl and white.
Cinecolor also developed a three-color process called SuperCineColor, but did not begin using it until 1951 with The Sword of Monte Cristo.

GAC Forums - Why produce them in color?
Paramount switched to Polarcolor during this time, Columbia was using Cinecolor and I don't know what MGM, Disney or Lantz did, but I think this was around the time of Lantz closing his studio after moving to UA.
I'd guess that Cinecolor was just given the 3-color SEs and then did whatever they had to do to come up with 2-color printing elements.
If that's the case, the "Cinecolor" LTGC titles made from the 3-color SEs would now have just as much right to be called "Technicolor" as any of the others whose projection prints were produced via dye transfer.

 Cinecolor
Cinecolor, for reasons that are unclear, used a light orange film base quite similar to the orange mask that is used on color negative and intermediate films, but only for 8mm and 16mm.
The overall quality is quite good, far exceeding Technicolor two-component prints, but Cinecolor, not having a satisfactory method of photographing the full color spectrum until 1948 when Eastman and Ansco/Agfa stocks were introduced in the U.S., spent a lot more time refining their two-component system than Technicolor which essentially abandoned two-component in 1935.

 Cinecolor Three-Color Process
The entire Cinecolor three-color process is described from the printing of negatives to the final inspection of the finished print.
This is due to the fact that, in the substandard field, Cinecolor utilizes 35-mm width film with multiple rows of either 16-mm or 8-mm perforations so that it becomes necessary only to flip the pivoted bracket when a splice between 35-mm film and either of the two substandard films appears at the driving mechanism.
Because of the simplicity of the first stage, which requires only a few solutions, the length of the machine permits it to be operated at twice the speed of the other machines, and thus to supply two machines utilized for the second stage of the process.
