 | | The theme of the semester ("Cinema and Time") is designed to encompass many possible sorts of topics; although most of the films we discuss in class will come from the 1920's and 1930's, the final research paper does not have to restrict itself to that period. |
 | | At the end of the course, students should be able to bring an increased sophistication and depth to their understanding of how sound contributes to (or diminishes!) the film experience, and be able to express this understanding in a coherent, sensitive, sophisticated, and technically and historically knowledgeable and compelling manner. |
 | | Third, the course evaluates the films as art works interpreting issues and themes in Philippine society, such as censorship and morality, art and commerce, film and politics, authoritarianism and artistic freedom, hispanism and anglosaxonism, patriarchy and the stereotyping of females and gays, and foreign influence and national identity in cinema. |
