  RPGamer - Editorials - Gamer-Countergamer - Cinematics in RPGs
Cinematics and video can be good things and have their own place, but they shouldn't usurp the game that features them.
Cinematics are the frosting atop the RPG cake.
Final Fantasy X's use of cinematics during key scenes, such as the sending on Kilika Island and the final scene on the airship, evoked emotions that a non-cinematic approach could not have accomplished.

GameDaily BIZ: Opinion: Cinematics & Story Do Matter
He believes that cinematics and story will be needed to captivate a growing video game audience.
The recent article by David Rodriguez, Lead Designer at High Voltage regarding cinematics and storytelling in games has touched off another round of fierce debate concerning the role of videogames as an entertainment medium.
The merits of if a cinematic and/or story detract from a game experience is rather mute, as story is one of the oldest and fundamental forms of entertainment, expression and communication.

Cinematics are killing gameplay? - AllRPG.com Forums
What cinematics do is give you a lot more story development in a shorter amount of time, as well as flesh out the characters and give life to some of the bigger events in the game's plot.
Yes, gameplay is a huge reason we play games, but cinematics (at least when done well like in XS or FF) really adds to the experience immensely.
There are some things, such as really good cinematics that add to the story a great deal, that should be made in great quantity.

We were therefore surprised and pleased when we heard the team had received more than an hour of pre-rendered cinematics from three external animation studios, the complete set of binders that will connect the maps and help immerse us in the mystical world.
Although Dahlgren credits the animation studios for pulling the cinematics together, there were still more people involved behind the scenes, something that demonstrates the complex logistics factored into even one portion of a game.
The result is that even though the cinematics move people from a real-time engine to a pre-rendered scene, they should never feel removed from the game.

 Slashdot | Cinematics Do Matter?
His latest article on Buzzscope discusses videogaming's overabundance of cinematics, and how their misuse is taking us further and further away from what videogaming is all about." From the article: "I made it perhaps three virtual feet before managing to trigger another cinematic.
Well done cinematics, when they add to the story and aren't in the way (and can be skipped if I want to), are great, but should only be implemented after good gameplay and story are pretty much wrapped up.
There are games where the cinematic has immersed the player and made playing the game essential, there are games where everything has suffered just to get you a 30 second poorly animated piece of crap.

jockrock - Oceansize / Martin Grech / The Cinematics live review
However, the place is no where near suited for Martin Grech, his eerie mystical sound is probably more suited to glens and valleys of Northern Scotland, his voice seems to soar higher and higher until all that is heard is a demonic wail blanketing the chattering crowd.
Martin Grech's sound is for die-hards only, it is hard to appreciate other than to go and drink a toast at the bar to the lost souls at the front of the audience who treat him as if he was God/Devil.
Joy Division-sounding 80’s band is the ‘in thing’ just now, and well, The Cinematics have the songs; all they need is the darker nights to encompass their dark melodic music and draw in the masses.

If the stars are aligned just right maybe every dev will come to their senses and recognize cinematics for the bad idea that they are.
I know that cinematics have gotten way out of hand lately, I mean in some senses they have to be in-depth to create that intense 'movie-like' experience we heard lauded about through the 90's.
I personally liked the way Half-life did their cinematics, its all in-game and the whole time you're able to interact with the enviroment, the person(s) talking to you, and even able to just ditch the whole ordeal and run down the corridor.

Slashdot | Cinematics Are Killing Gameplay?
Cinematics and story in general are great, but they should be used in moderation when the story is not the main focus of the game.
Sure, those hyper-realistic pre-rendered cinematics are pretty and all, but it reminds you subconciously that this is seperate from the rest of the game.
Cinematic elements in games including scripted sequences, fmv's, in game cutscenes etc are closely parralled to the beginning of film.

Rodriguez argues that instead of focusing time, energy, and most importantly money on elaborate cinematics in games, developers should concentrate on just ensuring that their game is actually good.

However, based on this single, The Cinematics owe more to those mid nineties bands that didn't quite break out of the shadow of the likes of Smiths-copyists Gene than to anything else.
