Cineon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cineon was the first computer system designed by Kodak for digital intermediate film production.
Thus, Cineon files are assumed to operate as part of a reproduction chain keeping whatever values are originally scanned from a negative or positive film.
Conversions to the Cineon format were defined in a Kodak document by Glenn Kennel, "Conversion of 10bit Log Film data to 8bit Linear or Video Data".

cineon files are usually in 10-bit lograrithmic format.
Cineon files need to have the proper lookup table applied to them in order for you to work on them.

A new logarithmic RGB space based on Kodak's Cineon log definition has been added to support images which use a logarithmic density encoding (with range of 0 to 2.048) according to Kodak specifications.
While there is some continued use of the legacy Kodak Cineon format due to existing equipment and software, the standard image file format for motion picture frames is SMPTE DPX (SMPTE 268M-2003).
This format is somewhat similar to the Kodak Cineon format, but has the advantage that it is an industry standard rather than a vendor standard.

Cineon plug in filters or Cineon Converter, especially for the PC and the MAC are very limited in the scope of their abilities.
Explosions often present a challenge to Cineon scanning because of the heavy densities experienced at the initial point of the explosion.
Beside using CURVES as an adjustment for Cineon 10-bit to 10-bit, CURVES is excellent for converting to 8-bit standard output.

Cineon is not DPX and DPX is not Cineon.
Cineon code values are related to density so that Cineon is logarithmic.

When you import footage, the bit depth is initially set to the bit depth of the footage in the Output controls of the Footage operator.
Now, if you import a Cineon image sequence, and look in the Output controls of the Footage operator, Use LUT is enabled, and the Depth list is set to the Conversion Depth in the preferences.
Since a LUT can be saved inside a Cineon file, the Log to Linear method uses the LUT that is in the file, if available.

As (as far as i know..perheps except the cineon system by kodak) all the systems are working in linear colorspace, you have to insert a delog node (or use the file loader`s capability) at the very beginning of your compositing script.

The tape file format for Exabyte tape, Metrum tape, Ampex DST tape and the Ciprico parallel disks with tape emulation is based on the tar (tape archive) file format in common use in UNIX systems.
The Cineon system may create many different types of files contained on a tape.

In addition, you probably also want a format that's space-efficient, at least a little flexible on things like compression, and that avoids those downright weird situations that often arise in mathematical color models, such as negative colors and hues brighter than pure white, which are hard to explain to the camera-shopping public.
Cineon is a 10-bits-per-channel logarithmic encoding designed to work with motion picture film.
These days, Cineon has been superseded by the Digital Moving Picture Exchange (DPX) format, which is an SMPTE standard (SMPTE 268M-2003) that extends Cineon in several useful ways.

Each number in the file is supposed to represent.002 times the base-10 logarithim of the density of the film.
They also document that the negative's density is proportional to the amount of light that struck the film raised to a power called the "gamma" of the film, which is about.6.
There is also a "base" density that is added to this value (unexposed film does not have zero density) but normally the Cineon scanner or software is adjusted to subtract this during scanning.

This non-proprietary attitude about the file format for Cineon's images is in keeping with an evolving computer industry philosophy that stresses an open systems approach to best serve users with a mix of installed hardware.
