  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Cinepak
Cinepak is based on vector quantization, which is a significantly different algorithm from the discrete cosine transform (DCT) algorithm used by most current codecs (in particular the MPEG family, as well as JPEG).
Cinepak was originally developed by SuperMac for use with Apple's QuickTime on the Macintosh.
Cinepak is a lossy, block-oriented compressor, using vector quantization (VQ) to perform its compression.

 AVI, Cinepak Codec
File format that wraps a Cinepak video bitstream with other data chunks, e.g., audio.
Used as a middle-state format (often used as the video source when producing lower-resolution streaming versions); also used as a final-state format for enduser delivery.
Moderate to good, given that this is a format typically used for compression and does not support interlaced video.

If you already have Cinepak installed, you can update to our version just by copying ICCVID.DLL over the top of the copy you already have (in Win 9X, \windows\system; in Win NT/2K/XP, \winnt\system32).
If you do not already have Cinepak installed, then you did not choose to install the multimedia/video components when you installed Windows.

Cinepak is a vector quantization based codec developed specifically to deliver 24-bit video in quarter screen (320 X 240 pixel) windows from files restricted to single-spin CD-ROM data rates.
Cinepak's decompressor then uses a CLUT (color lookup table) to recreate the color of each pixel in a frame.

Our application converts movies made from digital film to CVID (CinePak) using Movie_tool_box, but we can't overcome the noise problem when the temporal quality is set to 512 or 1024.
The more pixels you have with the same contrast level, the more CinePak will adjust the values to similar or near-similar pixel values, which could cause additional noise.
The CinePak codec tries to adjust these constantly changing values to something near average, causing pixel flashes.

Another nice quality of the Sorenson codec is that it is much more tolerant of higher frame rates than Cinepak is. That is, there is little difference in file size whether your movie's frame rate is 5 fps or 15 fps.
