  Cinerama
The Cinerama system displays a widescreen effect by simultaneously projecting images from three synchronized projectors onto a huge, deeply-curved screen.
It is difficult to assess the impact these films must have had on the big screen, since nowadays they are only seen on television or video in the form of Cinemascope prints, which marry the three images together with the joins clearly visible.
Cinerama is also the name of a UK music band, headed up by David Gedge[?], who was the former frontman for The Wedding Present[?].

Cinerama restored a visceralness to moviegoing that had been largely missing since the nickelodeon, where novice film audiences would flinch at the sight of waves or a man pointing agun at the camera.
Cinerama guys hate multiplexes, hate small screens, hates sloppy projectionists, hate the fact that sutdios couldn't care less about all this, because they just want to dump pictures into as many theaters as possible and take the money and run.
In 1963, Cinerama finally made it to third-tier citites such as Dayton with the release of How the West Was Won, the first Cinerama feature with movie stars and one which Harvey, by then a working professional, had the honor of projecting.

Since Gedge spent the better part of two decades in a band that painted his diverse tastes into a corner musically, it's no surprise that his new work would be just as heartfelt and prolific as that of his former band.
On pace to rival the generally welcomed bin clogging of the Wedding Present, Cinerama released a clutch of multi-format singles in support of their debut LP, as well as a number of intervening releases prior to 2000's Steve Albini-recorded Disco Volante.
Notable was the band's inaugural release on their own Scopitones label on Valentine's Day of 2000 (Manhattan), which featured a cover of the Smiths' "London." Conveniently collecting the group's first four singles, This Is Cinerama was released just weeks after Disco Volante.

To appreciate Cinerama's impact, you have to remember that from their infancy, with very few exceptions, movies had been shot and shown in a virtually square format; even the bosom-heaving Technicolor spectacle that was Gone with the Wind had been corseted within a frame whose rigid proportions dated back to Thomas Edison's laboratories.
That was the void filled by Cinerama, which was so wide it had to be shot by a three yoked-together cameras and shown by three synchronized projectors, their images blended to fill a vast, deeply curved, panoramic screeen that was nearly three times as wide as it was tall.
As the curtains slowly parted to reveal the reast of the huge, engulfing screen, the film cut to what has been called the most famous point-of-view shot in history, taken by the bulky, three-eyed camera as it was lashed to the front seat of a roller coaster.

Mel: With Cinerama being, in a sense, a solo project, whereas Wedding Present was an actual band, that must have radically changed the approach to recording an album because instead of having band members play you have to figure out each sound individually and how you're gonna get that on the record.

Gedge fronted the long-also-running UK group the Wedding Present for 12 years, patenting a strummy, light-angst sound that was frustratingly difficult to take seriously, despite the craft and quality concealed in their best work.

From the opening track's spaghetti Western styled guitar, it's obvious that the band name is no fluke, and the songs on Disco Volante not only draw their sonic inspiration from such classic soundtrack composers as John Barry and Ennio Morricone, but play like mini-films or perhaps short stories put to film.
The key that holds it all together is Gedge's lovely tenor voice and unerring sense of melody, all infused with sort of upbeat good cheer that is a perfect antidote to the legions of nihilistic whiners who have come to dominate popular music in the last few years.
Admirably aided by coproducer Steve Albini, the clear-eyed Pop of Cinerama is joy incarnate and sexy to boot.

If the standing-room-only crowd at Dingwalls served as any indication, Torino has clearly caught the ear of the old-schoolers, who arrived clad in their Wedding Present garb from days of yore, forming a 100% cotton Gedge-time-line (how they keep their decade old t-shirts in such pristine condition is beyond me).
Amusingly, Cinerama always seems to rock out more in concert than on its albums and many in the crowd were definitely not expecting the energetic response the band received.
