Cinerama was a wide-screen format of the early 60's, which used three separate 35mm projectors and a vast curved screen to present realistic travelogues.
The Dome has now become the centerpiece of a three-level entertainment and retail center, featuring 14 additional ArcLight screens (in a separate building behind the existing dome), 63,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space; a health club, microbrewry, nightclub, a parking garage, and 26,500 square feet of office space.
The Cinerama Dome is bordered by Sunset Boulevard, Vine Street and De Longpre and Ivar avenues.

Cinerama was developed by Fred Waller and was the outgrowth of many years of development.
Cinerama was introduced on 30 September 1952, at the Broadway Theatre in New York.
Cinerama continued through the rest of the 1960s as a brand-name used initially with the Ultra-Panavision 70 widescreen process (which yielded a similar aspect ratio as the original Cinerama, although it did not simulate the 146 degree field of view.) Specially modified "rectified" prints were necessary to project this onto the curved screen.

Michael Forman was in charge of constructing the Dome in 1963, and was key in the restoration of the theater and the new prints.
Cinerama movies are very expensive, as three prints need to be made for the 3 projectors for each reel shown.
To strike new prints, Crest built a Cinerama theater at their lab with 3 Cinerama projectors (Cinerama projectors are different than normal 35mm projectors), a seven track sound system, and a 146 degree curved screen.

Cinerama Dome (recently refurbished and now operated by ArcLight), Hollywood CA, 05/01/2002, 1:00PM, "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", 35mm, scope, stated screen width is 86 feet, deeply curved.
They supposedly axed the idea of installing a Cinerama strip-type screen because they were afraid that vibration caused by the subwoofers would be noticeable in the image.

Cinerama was too technically challenging to last and just seven films were made in the three-strip format.

When it opened in 1963 as the first movie theater designed exclusively for Cinerama films, it was heralded as "The only theater of its kind in the world." Today, Hollywood's famous Cinerama Dome remains the only surviving theater of its type in the world.
According to Pacific's redevelopment proposal, only the very top of the striking geodesic dome would remain visible, while the lobby, forecourt, and the famous "Cinerama" marquee would all be torn down to make way for a bistro, brewery, and fitness center.

We projected our color corrected digi beta (Courtesy of Leon Silverman of Laser Pacific) in the middle of the giant screen, from where I was standing the audience had a lot of fun with the documentary, reacting to all the history and personalities who created the widescreen/stereo sound revolution.
So on came the 1:33 35mm breakdown reel just in time, everyone in the audience thought it was planned to happen that way, as they watched Lowell Thomas explain that we have just had a breakdown and it will be fixed in just a few minutes.
After about 9 minutes of Lowell entertaining us the Cinerama show resumed with the roller coaster, the wet and wild river rafting scene (with squirt guns blazing for each wave!!!!), the flight across America and the "How the West Was Won" 3 panel trailer.
