Topic: Cinereous Bunting

Bunting (bird) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Buntings are a group of mainly European passerine birds of the family Emberizidae.
They are seed-eating birds with a distinctively shaped bill, and are the Old World equivalents of the species known in North America as sparrows (However, these birds are not closely related to the Old World sparrows which are in the family Passeridae).
There are a few species named as "buntings" which are now classed in the cardinal family.

It is situated in the corner of a not too steep ravine, bounded on one side by a small rock face, and on the other by slopes containing open grass topped by scree and boulders.
At least 3 pairs of Cretzchmar's Bunting, and a pair of Cirl Buntings were present, and on the slopes probably up to 3 different Black-eared Wheatears, 2 dark and 1 light throated.
Between the songs of Cretzchmar's Bunting was something a little different - not quite as nasal with a flutey end - a male Cinereous Bunting was found on the telegraph wires not far below.

This much sought after bunting is local and scarce throughout its near eastern and middle eastern range, breeding on high, barren slopes with little vegetation.
Almost every other bunting I found was a Cinereous or so it seemed, and most of them gave enchanting views in fantastic light.
By the end of the day I'd recorded a total of ten Cinereous Buntings, by far the most I've ever seen in a day in Israel and actually higher than the previous highest total given for the Eilat area (8 on 27th March 1984) in the Birds of Israel (Shirihai 1996).

Lesvos is renowned for its spring migration with large numbers of warblers, flycatchers and waders passing through the island.
Breeding species include Rüppell’s and orphean warbler in coastal scrub and Cretzschmar’s bunting, western rock nuthatch and middle spotted woodpecker in olive groves.
Of special interest are the sought-after Krüper’s nuthatch and cinereous bunting, birds of Middle Eastern origin that are very difficult to see elsewhere in Europe.

Among the birds that are found in the valley were Upcher's Warbler, Cretzschmar's Bunting, Orphean Warbler (Sylvia hortensis), Ortolan Bunting (Emberiza hortulana), lots and lots of Woodchat Shrikes (Lanius senator), Sombre Tits (Parus lugubris), Long-tailed Tit, Black-eared Wheatear (Oenanthe hispanica), Finsch's Wheatear, Rufous Bush Robin, Rock Nuthatch and the ever present Black-headed Bunting.
Cinereous Bunting (Emberiza cineracea) was the other goal of the trip and Ian eventually spotted one quite distant sitting on a rock.

The Magic of Lesbos Bird Watching Report
After breakfast we drove along East River on another overcast morning and it wasn’t too long before we were watching more Black-headed Buntings along the track, to add to the one seen on the previous evening, whilst along the river itself a lone Purple Heron was fishing in the river.
Further on there were good views of Eastern Orphean Warblers, Masked Shrikes, Cirl Buntings and as we were returning we watched a Black Stork gliding effortlessly over the valley in the late afternoon sunshine.
Then we experienced one of the most impressive signs of migration when about 200 Black-headed Buntings were observed moving around in flocks of 30 or 40, well supported by Rollers, Golden Orioles, Lesser Grey Shrikes, a first summer Pallid Harrier and a Masked Shrike, that was building a nest.

Just a few miles off the Turkish coast, the attractive Greek isle of Lesbos is now firmly on the map as one of the best places, not just in Greece, but in the whole of Europe, for watching birds on spring migration.
The geology is fascinating, with the evidence of volcanic activity everywhere, from ancient lava plugs, some dramatically topped with churches and monasteries, to the Petrified Forest, where, in a cataclysmic explosion similar to the one that overwhelmed Mount St Helens, the trees were smothered in volcanic debris.
This time period is probably the best time to visit, with an abundance of migrants, Black-headed Buntings in full song, and late migrant breeding species such as Rufous Bushchat just arriving.

The most intriguing records were of large flocks of pin-tailed sandgrouse seen by Dave Bradford at the new Bab Al Shams resort, near Dubai (we look forward to a new site description), and of two crackers from the still-unwatered Al Wathba Camel Track, a linnet and a cinereous bunting, both from Chris Clark.
A morning visit to a rather quiet Al Wathba Camel Track found 4 sand martins, 3 short-toed larks, 3 red-throated pipits, 3 isabelline wheatears, an Upcher's warbler, a lesser whitethroat, an isabelline shrike and — the two stars — a linnet and a cinereous bunting.
Other birds seen there during the day included 2 Pacific golden plovers, 10 chestnut bellied sandgrouse, 6 swallows, a tawny pipit, 6 red-throated pipit, 6 rufous bushchats (in the wood), 2 isabelline wheatears, a whitethroat (wood), 2 Upcher's warbler (wood) and 3 pale rock sparrows.
