In 1937 Papez proposed a linkage between cingulate cortex and emotion based on the relay of connections from the hypothalamus to the anterior thalamus and from there to the cingulate cortex.

Recently we developed a means of isolating and quantifying pain-related activity in the anterior cingulate cortex, which is a brain area located in medial part of the frontal lobe.
Indeed, previous studies, involving visual and auditory stimuli, have shown that the anterior cingulate cortex is involved in orienting attention towards novel, potentially important stimuli and in resolving response conflicts (e.g., when a stimulus elicits multiple responses and all but one must be inhibited).
We have also identified subsequent electrophysiological responses that originate from the frontal cortex and the inferior parietal cortex that are in involved in orienting attention towards the pain and evaluating it, respectively.
