American sparrows are not closely related, and these are placed in the family Emberizidae along with the buntings.
The differences between different species of sparrow can be very subtle; in general, sparrows tend to be small plump brownish or greyish birds with short tails and short powerful beaks.
Sparrows are not naturally found in Australia or the Americas, but the early settlers imported them into these continents, and they quickly naturalised, particularly in urban and degraded areas.

The usually reliable distinguishing mark--a breast spot on the tree sparrow where there is none on the Chipping Sparrow--can be deceptively unreliable.
In summer this slightly smaller sparrow (5.5" long, 14 cm) has a chestnut cap, a distinct white eyebrow and fl eyeline, and a dark bill.
Note that the breast spot on the tree sparrow is not visible from this angle.

Back at the car park, the surprise bird of the day appeared in the shape of a Song Sparrow which really shouldn’t be anywhere near here, but lunch was beckoning and we had to get going.
The fitter members of the group even managed to stay up to see in the New Year — while those who didn’t plan on being awake were no doubt encouraged to do so by the huge firework display that went off all over the city at the stroke of midnight.
Black-and-white Warbler, Bell’s Vireo, Cinnamon Hummingbird and a smart Blue-headed Vireo were among the birds found and enjoyed, but the award for sharp eyes of the tour finally went permanently to Daphne who spotted a well-camouflaged Russet-crowned Motmot as we streaked by in the van.

Well, it was raining a little by then and one of the owls was showering outside in the large trees--wings up, feathers fluffed, moving from side to side--thoroughly enjoying the short shower.
All of these birds were singing with gusto and at one point the chipping sparrows were so loud we had to record it for posterity (Marilyn's, not mine).
They looked like woodpeckers as they clung to the side of the poles, poking their heads in and out of the openings.

 Oaxaca in Spring Bird Watching Report
The star here was our first Bridled Sparrow, but Slate-throated Whitestart was also a strong contender.
After lunch, a nice surprise here was a very obliging Oaxaca Sparrow which fed seemingly unconcernedly almost at our feet and remained the talking point — right up until we found our first Red-faced Warbler — wow!
Similar to Chipping Sparrow, but with grey nape, brownish rump and pale lores.
