circadian rhythm   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-21)
The '''Circadian rhythm''' is name given to the "internal body clock" that regulates the (roughly) 24 hour cycle of biological processes in animals and plants.
The Circadian "clock" in mammals is primarily located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), a distinct group of cells located in the hypothalamus.
Contributing to this clock are light receptors found in the retina which have a pathway, (called the ''retinohypothalamic tract''), leading to the SCN.

Circadian rhythm is the name given to the roughly 24 hour cycles shown by physiological processes in plants and animals.
Circadian rhythms are important in determining the sleeping and feeding patterns of all animals, including humans.
Recently, evidence has emerged that circadian rhythms are found in many cells in the body--outside of the SCN "master clock." Liver cells, for example, appear to respond to feeding rather than light.

Using the clock gene mutants of cyanobacteria, we have also found the first conclusive evidence that a circadian clock resonating with the environmental cycle enhances the reproductive fitness of the organism in a manner that indicates the action of soft selection.

Recent progress in the cloning of circadian genes in mammals as well as my discovery of peripheral clocks (circadian clocks outside the central nervous system) has raised the intriguing possibility that altered circadian rhythms are involved in human disease.

He describes the sleep cycle and gives a short history of sleep research.
Then he dives into clear and detailed explanations of concepts and conditions we've all heard about, but that few of us understand: sleep debt, biological clock, circadian rhythm, insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy.
He discusses why we need sleep (sounds obvious, but it isn't) and the role of dreams.
