Changeup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The changeup is thrown with the same arm action as a fastball, but at a lower velocity due to the pitcher holding the ball in a special grip.
The changeup is analogous to the slower ball in cricket.
Tom Glavine's changeup grip is a circle change grip, but because he does not pronate his wrist, he doesn't have the screwball movement, but rather, more sink on the pitch than the straight change.

THE CIRCLE CHANGEUP (sometimes called an "okay changeup"; "OK changeup") and the four-seam fastball are what got me to professional baseball.
I also discuss this in my three-finger changeup article, but one great way to develop "fastball mechanics" but changeup speed is to practice throwing your changeup as you long toss (throwing beyond 90 feet).
THE PALMBALL (sometimes called a "palm ball" or "four-finger changeup") is one of two or three variations of the changeup.

Tavarez formerly used a split-finger fastball as his changeup with varying success.

The key to a good changeup is that it's supposed to look like a fastball with the big difference being a huge drop in speed, You may also find it helpful to push off the rubber differently to reduce leg speed and maybe even not push off at all.
The pitch needs to be released off the fingertips and you may need to exagerrate a target 5 or 10 feet to the left (again this would be for a right-hander and would be to the right for a lefty)..
The 5 pitches I specialize in are the 4-seam fastball, Circle Changeup, Knucklecurve, Forkball, Screwball, and Split-Finger Fastball.

How to Throw Basic Pitches: Fastballs, Curve and the Circle Change by Ryan Schnier
A circle changeup is a pitch thrown with a grip that includes a circle formation, hence the name.
A circle change can also be used to provide screwball-type movement.
By placing the index and ring fingers slightly to the inside (that is, towards the thumb) of the ball and sharply pronating the forearm at release, a pitcher can make the ball move downward and armside.

Houston's Nance uses a nice change of pace to spice up arsenal   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Nance, who has clocked 91 mph with his fastball this season, was getting battered around last fall in intrasquad drills when UH coach Rayner Noble made him use changeups exclusively for an inning.
It's a variation of a circle changeup (where the thumb and first finger form a circle around the side of the ball, while the other three fingers grip) and he can throw it for a straight change or give it movement to go away from a righthanded hitter.
Noble said he is happy with not only the wins but the attitude that Nance shows on and off the mound.

 SI.com - Writers - Wise guys (cont.) - Tuesday April 25, 2006 12:53PM
What Posada saw were Mussina's index, middle and ring fingers splayed across the top of the baseball, a grip that makes it impossible for a pitcher to throw anything but an off-speed pitch.
He slid his index finger more to the side of the ball than the top of the ball -- not quite the grip for a circle changeup, in which the thumb and index finger form a circle on the side of the ball, but a modified version of it.
Not only was Mussina able to disguise the pitch, but he also was able to throw it slower and generate better downward movement on it.

Connor's Pitching Tips - from Double Switched by Corey Green
There are two basic ways to pitch a change-up: "change-up," and "circle changeup." To pitch a regular change-up, put the ball all the way back in your hand, so that it is touching your palm.
To pitch a "circle change-up," make your thumb and forefinger into a circle on the baseball, and grip the ball with your three remaining fingers.
The "circle change-up" will have some drop on it because of the spin that your fingers put on the ball.
